Book compatible with PS 7?
Sorry if this has been discussed, but I skimmed through the forum and didn't see anything covering this (nor did I see a FAQ). I've been using PS7 for quite some time and came across this book the other day. I wanted to buy it right there on the spot, as it has instructions on many techniques that I've been trying to figure out and master. However, I then realized it was for "CS2". My question is, are the techniques, tools, etc covered in this book compatible with 7.0? If so, I'm going to buy this book right away. Fantastic book, by the way. I couldn't pull myself away from it and I was expecting the clerk to walk up at any time and tell me to buy it or leave. haha Jim |

Jimt, Welcome to the forum! The book does have sections which utilise CS2's unique features but they only make up a small proportion. The majority of the techniques will certainly work with PS7. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Thanks, David! I was afraid I'd get the book home and start tinkering around and find features suggested in the book that weren't available in PS7. Looks like a trip back to the bookstore is soon in order. Jim |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
I am working with Elements 3 and am enjoying the book tremendously. While I can't do everything, the explainations and things to watch for when putting a photo together definately made it worth it. I like to read sections and then work my way through it. I never even looked at the book when I did my Friday challenge for the first time this week! Never thought of it until someone mentioned it. A terrific book and I'm glad I got it. _________________ Pauline |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Thanks, Pauline! What a great comment! Of course, there are a lot of readers - several here, in fact - who use Elements 3, and many of the techniques work just fine. The book's about ideas as much as version-specific techniques, though, and I'm glad you're finding it useful. As for your original query, Jim - yes, I'd say around 95% of the book applies to PS7 as well as CS and CS2. You're missing out on some of the cool stuff in CS2, of course, so you might consider upgrading at some point! Hope you find the book interesting when you get it. Welcome to the forum! Steve |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Thanks for the welcome, Steve (and you too, David). Well, now I know what you sound like, Steve. Yes, that means I bought the book this morning. I also downloaded a 30-day demo of CS2 from the Adobe site, just in case there's something I'd like to learn that isn't available in PS7. Anyway, I'm really enjoying what I've read and watched so far, and I've actually learned some things today that I've wondered how to do for a long time. Hopefully I can continue to learn all the secrets and one day be a professional like you, Steve. ![]() I'm REALLY glad I found this book (which led to finding this site). While I might not be able to contribute much of anything for a while, it's nice to be able see that I'm not the only one who's just starting out. The tips and suggestions are a great resource for me, too. Jim |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
As I've said before, don't feel you have to be of an "acceptable standard" to join in the Friday Challenge, or to post your work on this site! It's been particularly gratifying, for me, to watch how readers have improved their PS work through entering the contest. All welcome! Remember, too, that if you get stuck you can always post a question here. We'd rather spend a couple of minutes writing you a reply than have you scratching your head unnecessarily. Enjoy the book. |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Steve one comment about the book. I thought it was terrific that you used some of the Friday challenge examples. It's wonderful for people to pick up the book and look at all the different ways of doing the same thing, and then be given the technique on how to do it. I'm sure the creative people whose work you selected also felt honoured to appear in your book. This is certainly a friendly forum and I hope to participate in more Friday challenges. Jim the challenges really do help you improve your abilities. I participate in a few from my ps elements list and it's a lot of fun. _________________ Pauline |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Absolutely Pauline. If nothing else the Friday challenge really gives you great confidence to experiment with different techniques and although they might not always work you will usually recieve positive feedback both from Steve and the other forum members suggesting why it didn't quite work and how to change things to improve the image. Participating really does huge amounts for your confidence and your bound to make quick improvements as a result. |

Re: Book compatible with PS 7?
Messing around with your own images in PS is fun, certainly, but there's always the temptation to use your tried and trusted techniques rather than looking for new approaches - and it's all too easy to get overwhelmed by a filter or technique, and not look beyond that. The point of the Challenges is to give you a brief to work to, much in the same way as I work to briefs for magazines and newspapers. It's the problem-solving approach that underpins the whole book: start from what's required of you, and work backwards to the solution. |
