Awards an all that
This ones for Steve.

I'm forever facinated and sometimes speechless when awards for art are given. I've yet to get one myself (then again I haven't submitted an unmade bed or a pile of bricks yet) but....

I read on your webpage that you have received awards (D&AD, and the Campaign Poster Award) for your designs - any chance you would share them with me and the other members so we can all see what we can aspire to. cheers

The advertising industry is based on people giving each other awards for just about everything. Frankly, I can't even remember what some of the ones I got were for. That's not just false modesty: these things are doled out like junk mail.

The only one I have a clear recollection of was for the Stella Artois tennis championship. It illustrates a point: ad agencies are more keen on winning awards than they are on selling products. In this instance, the agency hired a single poster site - one of those revolving ones - for two weeks, and had a special motor made so that rather than going round and round to show all three faces, it would flip back and forth between two views. They hired the photographer Malcolm Venville for a couple of days, as well as 24 people in full makeup and costume, and two dogs. Here's the result:

The really tricky thing about this, from my point of view, is that it was done in 1993 - before Photoshop had layers. It was a nightmare to put together.

At one point, Stella Artois pointed out that they'd already sold all the tickets, so there was really no need to advertise the event. The agency insisted. And, as they expected, it won awards - I got a D&AD and a Campaign Poster Award for this one.

Really, though, it's all a load of nonsense.

Cheers for that Steve. I did my own take on the industry and the pretentiousness of it all based around the artist Piero Manzoni and his infamous selling his own sh*t - and the suckers bought it too
