Upgrading to CS3 or CS3 Extended?
I'm torn between upgrading to CS3 or CS3 extended? Which path will you follow? Steve any words of wisdom from someone in the know? Will CS3 become the new Photoshop Elements? Will the forth edition of your book include sections specifically for CS3 extended?

This is a tricky one, John. Originally, the Extended edition was billed as being for those with esoteric uses - scientists, for instance, who need to count molecules or measure areas on x ray scans.

But there's a lot of good stuff in here for the rest of us, most notably 3D layers, which allow you to place 3D objects into Photoshop. And yes, I will be covering that in the next edition. There are also some useful features such as the ability to edit movies frame by frame, and to clone from one frame to another.

The Extended edition does have some good stuff in it. But the standard is in no way Elements: it has many great enhancements.

The Extended edition will be included in most of the CS3 bundles. As for buying it on its own - well, that depends on how much you think you'll need the extra features. You wouldn't be getting a second rate product if you simply opted for the standard version, certainly. But I for one couldn't do without 3D layers - I've been using them for the last six months, and couldn't manage without them now.

Steve, thanks for the information.
Despite the restraining order, looks as if I'll have to go back to emailing my long lost brother Terry White at Adobe in an attempt to get the "family discount".

As Eggs have 'whites' in them do you think I qualify for a similar discount?

With 3D in the new package I fancy wearing the Red/Green glasses.

It's not that sort of 3D, Ted!

Unfortunately, I think we're both end up with the same discount.

So is the Standard version a true upgrade to CS2? Is there nothing missing? Extended version just has even more stuff?

Yes. With the upgrade you still get the new features such as Smart Filters, improved Vanishing Point, Clone Source, etc.
