Hi vicho,

There is a tutorial on the Russell Brown Website for this. Here is a link.

This works quite well.

Open the photo that you'd like to turn into a pencil sketch. This technique works on just about any type of photo. Good candidates are landscapes, buildings, and portraits.
First, duplicate the background layer by pressing Control + J. You should now see two copies of this layer in the Layers palette.
Click once on the top copy of the layer to select it. Then, remove all of the color from it by choosing Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.
Now, duplicate the desaturated layer by pressing Control + J again.
Next, invert the top copy by going to the Image menu and choosing Adjustments > Invert. This gives the photo an almost digital negative look.
Still working on the same layer (the inverted one), change the layer's blend mode from Normal to Color Dodge.
At this point, you shouldn't be able to see much of the photo anymore. Everything should be almost white.
Go to the Filter menu and choose Other > Minimum. Start dragging the slider until you see details of the sketch start to appear. The lowest setting of 1 pixel usually works well.

Re: how to paint a drawing
thanks Dave,
that was brilliant, I have set it up as an action. If you then reduce the opacity of the middle layer, you get a lovely pastel drawing.

Vibeke, Your idea of setting an action is a good idea.

I've been trying to learn javascript for photoshop, so I decided to do it this way instead of an action. If you want to try it, here is a javascript that performs the entire procedure that I posted above. Unzip, and place it in the presets/scripts directory where you have your photoshop installed, and it will appear in your scripts list. Since it is javascript, it should work on both PC and Mac.

Re: how to paint a drawing
Vicho started of asking about painting a drawing. Here is a photograph I took in B/W in Spain in 1962. I used the 'script' to convert it into a drwaing, then coloured the background layer, with the brush set to 'color', used the burn tool on the black clothing. and then reduced the opacity layer in the middle layer to 72%
