PSP 8
I first discovered photo and graphics manipulation about 4 years ago. I got PSP 8 and learned it slow but well.

Then I got PS a year or two ago and chunked it cause I couldnt figure it out.

I always figured that PS could do way more than PSP but was never sure cause I couldnt work it.

Then I got your book and im amazed at the things PS can do compared to my PSP. But im still having quivering fits trying to figure it out.

Maybe you guys have some tips for adjusting to PS after my 4 year romance and addiction to PSP.

The zoom in and out is killing me.
With PSP Ijust use the roller on my mouse
In PS i can zoom in but it takes longer to zoom out.

The undo and step back....What the heck?
Its like it only lets you do so much.
Is there a setting to let you undo more?
I can undo all the way back to the beginning of my project in PSP.

And does PS do regular drop shadows like PSP?

The grouping thing is weird. Not sure why it does that but its frustrating. I tried to duplicate a layer and it grouped it and then I couldnt find it so I worked on the one I could see only to find out that it edited both of them (I think LOL) and then I couldnt undo anything so yeah............TWITCH TWITCH!!

Hi Stacy

I am not familiar with PSP, though I know several who use it. You tend to prefer the tool that you used first, so for me ...

Photoshop is designed to use both the mouse and the keyboard. You can press Z, to select the zoom tool, and then zoom in and out with the mouse. Or you can use the Ctrl - and Ctrl = keys on your keyboard to zoom in and out. (The ones next to the backspace key).

You can set the number of undo levels by going to Edit>preferences>General Locate the History States Box, and change it to the number of undo levels that you prefer. The higher the number, of course, the more memory that Photoshop will need.

At the bottom of the history pallette, you will also see a little camera icon. Click this to create a snapshot of your current state. Then you can back up to any snapshots that you have created.

I am not sure how PSP does drop shadows, but an easy way to do them in photoshop is this:

If you have the image that you want a drop shadow for in a seperate layer, simply duplicate the layer. Select the image by Ctrl+Clicking the eye icon, and fill with black. Move the layer below the layer that you copied it from, and use the position tool to position it as desired. Lower the transparency, and/or set the blending mode as desired, to get the effect that you want.

Of course, now that the drop shadow is in a layer of it's own, you can continue to modify to your hearts content the do other things with the shadow, such as removing unwanted portions, distorting to different positions, etc.

To duplicate a layer, simply select the layer that you want to duplicate from, and press Ctrl J. Or Right click on the layer, and select duplicate layer from the menu.

Other than that, the best advice is to continue working through Steve's book. The techniques are there, it just takes a little time to work through it.

Helen (Celosia) uses PSP, so she might be able to help - I'll mention it to her when I next speak to her.

PSP 8
Here are a few quick pointers.

Zoom
Press Z for the zoom tool, click on the image to zoom in, Alt-click to zoom out.

Undo
Ctrl-Alt-Z will undo one step at a time.

Drop Shadow
Double click on the layer (in the layers pallette) to get layer styles, then select drop shadow, change the parameters to suit.

Re: PSP 8
I started with PSP 8 but found myself staring at the screen trying to figure it out. Could not find any good books for it. I saw Steve's book and ended up buying PS because of it.
You're in great hands with these guys in the forum as far as learning. I'm not as experienced but I will say, try to forget some of the things you already know. If you try to use PS the same way as PSP 8 you will get frustrated. It's like driving a new car, PSP 8 is nice, but PS has better options and a much bigger engine!

...and this forum has great mechanics!

Welcome aboard!
