What do you think of my Personal Statement?
Just wanted to say I've applied for Photography for Digital Images for my Foundation Degree and wanted to ask what you all thought of my Personal Statement.

=============

When I was very young I discovered how to take photographs, I soon gained an interest and hobby in Photography and had taken a lot of pictures almost instantly when given a camera.

When I developed in age and education, I was introduced to an image editing package called "Paint Shop Pro" when making game content for a game called The Sims. After, I became very interested and addicted to using Paint Shop Pro to experiment with what it could do with my photographs I had taken in the past. I learnt the word Manipulation when I decided to research more into the subject of editing, and with time I found tutorials on the Internet on another image editing package named "Photoshop" and soon I discovered Photoshop was much more popular than Paint Shop Pro.

As time went by I grew more frequent and addicted to Photoshop, using it with pictures taken by myself and relatives. Nowadays I am asked to complete tasks for my relatives when they ask for pictures retouched with software to complete certain changes that isn't possible with just a camera.

In my BTEC course in Interactive Media & Game Development I gained a Distinction in Digital Graphics. My assignment was to create a cover for a video game for Windows using various techniques, the game brief followed five characters who battled an evil dragon threatening to destroy the Sun, thus destroying the world.

Recently I have worked through a book called "How to Cheat in Photoshop CS4" written by a montage artist and graphic designer for various news papers named Steve Caplin. This had taught me many things and made me enjoy working with pictures much more, the sections worked with Composition, Colour Correction, and Surfaces.

Before my BTEC in Interactive Media & Game Development, I had done my OCR in the same subject, and for my Digital Graphics subject I had been given an assignment which consisted of taking four photos around my college campus, putting them together in a montage and create an advertisement, along with the game cover on my BTEC course, this is one of my best achievements in my college education.

Jono,

The material in the statement is all good - but it could do with a little rewording.

Para 1: “had taken a lot of pictures almost instantly”. You mean, in a 60th of a second? “took a lot of pictures” is probably better.

Para 2: Don’t use “called” before PaintShop Pro and The Sims - they’ll know both of these, they won’t be new concepts to them. And miss out the quote marks. And you don’t have to explain to them what Photoshop is!

Para 3: Don’t use the word “addicted”. Makes you sound unstable. And end the second sentence after “retouched”.

Otherwise fine - good luck!

Ahh well, I e-mailed the person to change my personal statement a little early just after I posted the thread (I know, stupid me), but I said to her if she thinks any of it is bad to tell me about it. If she sends it back I'll follow your corrections, but if not, I'll just hope the person approves me and doesn't pick up on those little bits. ^^'

Thanks for the good luck!

No matter - I'm sure it will work just fine.

She emailed me back thanking me for the change in personal statements and I'd be asked for an interview with a portfolio if I got the course.

This'll be fun.
