Need advice on Apple Macbook
I am considering buying a Macbook to replace my Dell laptop (which is prone to over heating!) Any thoughts on a Macbook with 32gb ram? does apple even make these?. I had a Macbook pro in 2005 but I found it slow, hopefully now they have improved performance.

Obviously a desktop Mac would be best but I do most of my work away from a home so just need a powerful laptop.

Also how easy is it to run Windows on a macbook? Basically what I'm asking is 32gb Macbook V's PC laptop? and where can I find one?
thank!

Hi Artwell,

First thing to say is that I have yet to meet anyone who has been disappointed at the transition from PC to MAC. I am surprised to hear that you thought that your Macbook pro was slow; what were you trying to do with it?

You won't get 32Gb of RAM as MAC laptops only support up to 8Gb.

You can run Windows on a MAC as they now use Intel processors. There are a couple of ways to do this; one involves buying and installing a copy of Windows. I believe that this only supports XP or Vista but don't quote me on that one as they may have changed recently. Have a look at the Apple website for more detailed info. There may be a bigger demand on your processor to do this but Apple can tell you more about that.

Re: Need advice on Apple Macbook
Thanks Gordon. Well the Macbook I had was in 2005/2006. I didn't get on with the OS, plus it was my first ever laptop, but I know apple had over hauled everything these days.

I can't see 8gb being much use as I usually upgrade every 3years so by 2016 I think 8 gb just won't cut it.
I thought the new Macbooks supported upto 32gb? I will check the apple site. thanks.

Stick with a non Apple laptop.

If your main aim is to run windows and you don't like Mac OSX then why pay extra for a machine you'll hate.

If your previous Mac laptop was 2005 it must have been a Powerbook not a Macbook. I used to have a Powerbook and found it was very fast for it's age compared to my newer Vaio.

I think 8gb is plenty for a laptop. Whatever you are doing that requires more ram will probably require a better processor too.

Does it have to be a laptop? I bought a new iMac recently, which does support up to 32 Gb RAM, and the sheer speed is hugely impressive. When you buy a laptop you're paying a premium for its portability.

On the other hand, I also have a MacBook Pro with just 4 Gb RAM that I use for all my Photoshop lectures and demonstrations. It's easily powerful enough to handle everything Photoshop can throw at it, including all the 3D tools.

Paul raises a good question, though: why do you want to run Windows on it? Is this just so you can run one or two Windows-only programs, or as your main operating system? Because if you're not planning on working in OS X then, as Paul says, you probably don't want a MacBook in the first place.

Re: Need advice on Apple Macbook
Thanks for the replies. My current Dell XPS laptop is prone to overheating so I'm assuming Apples products cope a bit better.
I'm not too bothered about Windows, only for 3D studio Max (pc only) but I could use Cinema 4D instead..

I read that the new Macbooks can hold 16gb ram even when described as 8gb?, ( I think I'd sleep better knowing I had 16gb).

The obvious choice would be a desktop but I need the portability of laptop.

I think I just want the shiny apple products.. I guess it's a case of thinking with my heart of my head?.. so shiny though..

Just small additional comment:

After my trusty Dell laptop disk died, hard wearing, I replaced with MacBook Pro recently with 4GB with Intel i7 processor. It seems to go very fast, strong, maybe like Steve. With virtual memory/cache on the disk, it supports much more of course. Maybe i7 on this 2011+ version with fast disk helps +OS helps with that for speed.

Obviously according to Apple can expand to 8gb by adding 2 additional memory chips, but not sure about changing them all to support 32gb ($s or feasible). However according to Curcial can replace all 4 with 4x8 to give 16gb, but not sure about that....

I still use my PC windows desktop for my heavy things, and only some of my apps work on it. (But great fun, not really, working with two OSs at the same time and my apps not supported on both, including Photoshop I paid for, unless cancel one and transfer from PC to Mac, but then I only have one instance on the Mac and not my Desktop PC as well. Talked with Apple about that. Not happy with their solution and all the £ calls).

Concerning running Windows on it, not tried it yet cut would resolve a lot of my apps not being supported, including seconds PS instance I paid for not supported. I'm a bit scared to install Windows 7 on it, so wish to keep both separate physically at the present.
