Refine Edge
I just purchased the book "How to Cheat in Photoshop" and I am having a really hard time following the instructions. The refine edge tool has disappeared in PS. It's now under select and mask and is totally different than in the book. Are there any updates to the book?

Re: Refine Edge
Hi Barbara

The Refine Edge dialog was redesigned in a recent update to Photoshop, and while it appears somewhat different its core functionality is the same - with the added bonus of being able to make selections directly inside the dialog, rather than having to do this before entering it.

If you get stuck, please post a message here and we'll try to help out.

Steve

Re: Refine Edge
I also had the same question. Later I learned this little trick from a forum:

After making your selection, go to Select, then press and hold Shift and click Select and Mask.

Now you you can refine edge the old way!

Re: Refine Edge
That’s a good tip, larkspur. But it is worth getting to know the new Select and Mask, as there’s some useful functionality there that wasn’t in the old Refine Edge.

Re: Refine Edge
Thanks Steve. I have tried the new Refine Edge only once so far. I will use it more often going forward.

You can see one good reason to use Select and Mask on my YouTube channel here:

And of course do check out the other tutorials...
