Does the new mask layer 'badge' serve any good purpose except being annoying?
Since the last update Photoshop's mask layers in the layers palette now carry a little square badge in the bottom right corner of the white or black rectangle. Despite all manner of left and right clicking on it, it appears to do absolutely nothing. I have been unable to find any reason or use for this ....... apart from partly hiding the mask image contained within the rectangle which is hardly what I would class as a useful addition. What am I missing here? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I think it’s just to indicate that it’s a mask. Maybe people were getting confused. |

You can remove it by going on to the 'hamburger' menu, select 'panel options', then unclick 'show layer mask badges'. I think more than enough users complained to Adobe about this feature for them to add this option. ![]() |

That's not showing up in my completely up to date 2024. But I see it is in the beta so it should show up in the next 2024 update. As you say the feature came in for a lot of criticism and requests to be able to turn it off in the forums. There were some quite 'entertaining' posts. ![]() I shall keep my fingers crossed. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Version 25.2.0 is the one I use, just tried another machine, works there too. It's on the 'Layers' panel ![]() |

I have just checked. My PS 2024 is version 25.1 which does not show this feature. The beta is 25.3 and this has it. There is no update to 25.2 currently on offer in my creative cloud. Are you, by any chance on Windows? I am on Mac and I am wondering if Adobe rolls out the different OS upgrades at different time. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

AHA, there's your answer: Mac is being actively discriminated against. Launch a class action, sue Adobe for a a couple of million, I'll add my commission later ![]() ![]() ![]() |
