Re: Preview discrepancy??
That is strange, pretty much Photoshop is - what you see is what you get (wysiwyg).

There must be something going on with your Layer Blending or you Channel settings *shrugs*

I suppose you must have already tried to uninstall and reinstall PS?

No, as I said, that's my next step.

OK, the plot thickens.

I downloaded the full size image here at work. So, completely different PC setup. Replicated how I was doing it at home. Does exactly the same.

The full size JPG is here. It's 500kb (clipping path included). The noise setting should be set to 70%, gaussian, monochrome.

Sorry about harping on about this but it's beginning to bug me, even more so, now it's the same on 2 different PCs.

Re: Preview discrepancy??
Well, I just tried it on your file - and exactly the same thing happened to me. But at least I've figured out why.

It seems to me that PS generates previews in adjustment dialogs based on the view size you're looking at. When you're viewing a high res file such as this at less than 100%, it's amalgamating all that bitty noise into a preview and it's this preview to which the adjustment is applied. When you commit to it, it then applies it to the real artwork. Because noise operates on a per-pixel level, the preview is only an approximation of the real thing, so the result is different.

If you zoom in to 100% and try the Hue/Saturation thing again, you'll find the preview exactly matches the result. Incidentally, this is why we couldn't replicate it the first time around - the low res file you originally posted was previewed at 100%.

Phew!

[Slapping forehead vigorously] Of course! I hadn't thought to blow it up to full size. That would also explain why, when I reduced the amount of noise, it appeared to be better. Thanks Steve, I can rest at ease now.

So, here's the rusty wheel...was it worth all the hassle?

Re: Preview discrepancy??
The rust looks rusty but it's a bit uniformly rusty if you don't mind me saying. I'd personally paint bits out using the hue & sat Layer Mask.

Re: Preview discrepancy??
I agree but the effect I was going for was something that had been submerged or exposed for quite a while.

Re: Preview discrepancy??
Still too uniform, even for something submerged! If it was up to me, I'd only take a little off with a layer mask, but I'd go for some good old dodge & burn to make some more variation in that surface.

I'll have a better play at home, this PC is rubbish for hires work. Takes too long to do anything.

Re: Preview discrepancy??
Thanks Steve. Things are much easier on my own system, the one at work is like watching a long-distance satellite broadcast; not quite in sync.
