Hey Jamshid, you might even get an apology yourself for being spoken to so abruptly. My hat is off to anyone who communicates to others in a language other than their own.

Good luck in your masking, remember there's more than one way to reach a solution, some are better, i.e. quicker than others, and some are more time consuming if you want a more realistic solution. Dont be put off by someone elses domineering single mindedness.

Yes fair enough, Glen. My apologies to you Jamshid your English is better than my attempts at any other language.

And Glen you seem very hostile towards me, as if I go looking to offend. You know I wasn't being offensive but hey if you're going to keep pulling me up then I'm better off not coming here.

Re: Selecting hair
No hostilities towards you at all. I may offer constructive criticism once in a while to help you to improve your efforts as you do to others and would hope they are taken in the spirit of the forum but certainly no hostilities meant at all.

If you chose to take my comments as me ‘pulling you up’ then that’s up to you. As for the threat of not coming here anymore, again Becky, that’s your choice. Be a shame though.

Re: Selecting hair
Like you really care!

Come off it you directed your comment directly at me.

and where you got this from " Dont be put off by someone elses domineering single mindedness" from Jamshid's post can only prove hostility.

It's sad to see the two top dogs of the forum squabbling like this, lighten up, this is supposed to be fun!

Re: Selecting hair
Becky, if you want to continue this line of topic via private messaging I am happy to do so. I won't be drawn into some kind of public catfight.

You were abrupt, you have apologised, you have asked me if I'm hostile towards you and I have said I am not. You can now either carry this on in private or just carry on with no hard feelings either way. It's your choice.

Rufus, thanks. I'm really not looking for a squabble and I doubt Becky is too - misunderstandings happen - then they pass

Re: Selecting hair
Come on guys, as rufus says its such a shame when two of the best people on here get into a scrap over a posting. Unfortuntaly (as we all know) the joy of the written word means that sometimes it can be mis-interpreted and taken the wrong way.
Roll on the day when forums are constructed of spoken dialogue! Come on David invent it...

Go on, kiss and make up... I'm supposed to be the hormonal maniac round here

Re: Selecting hair
Yeah fair enough. I don't want to bring any bad atmosphere to such a lovely forum with some exceptional people. Plus it looks bad throwing all of Steve's hard work and dedication back in his face for the sake of a hissy fit.

Perhaps I'm hormonal, I'm certainly made up with a stinking cold and can't afford to have a single day off work.

Sorry Glen, I know you meant well.

Re: Selecting hair
This would be a terrific Friday Challenge!

I approach masking hair differently. I've never liked masking software and plug-ins, they never do a good job. The results look pixelated and unnatural. Not to mention how complicated they are to use. The only time they work well is when the subject is photographed with the idea of silhouetting them later.

I've tried Katrin Eismann's techniques, but they're so-o-o-o complicated. And unless they're done with care, the result looks pixelated and unnatural.

This image is hard because of the shadow and soft edges. I would use a technique close to David's, except I wouldn't use the Smudge tool to create the hairs, I'd render in strands of hair on separate layers.

It may sound crazy and time consuming, but you don't need that many strands to look convincing. This is a glamor shot, so you don't want many fly-away strands of hair. Care with a soft 1-pixel brush, set on a 50% opacity, picking up different colors from the subject's hair goes quickly and looks natural.

Use the Smudge tool as a small soft brush, set to 40%, to taper the ends of hairs. Using separate layers to paint strands helps control your efforts and makes the hairs look natural when they cross over each other.

Like I said, this is an ideal Friday Challenge.

Re: Selecting hair
Once again, I am sorry for starting this line in a way that caused this sort of rather abrupt discussion. That's the underside of written communication via the Internet -- you don't see people's faces and don't feel the tone. But please don't take it too personal. On the other hand, thank you all for sharing your wonderful ideas. Vika, the girl on the picture, was so pleased to see herself in the centre of this discussion :-) she says hi to everyone. Once I am finished with this picture I will post it here.

Re: Selecting hair
I think in this instance, as you say Neal, that masking no matter how well applied does return unnatural results. Yes I agree careful sampling and a 1px brush is a more professional approach, one other thing that seems to be an absolute must with recreating strands of hair is a Graphics Tablet I've found.

A Graphic Tablet allows you the control to create fine wisps of hair that tamper off smoothly rather than using the mouse that can look harsh and jerky but there is a lot of disciplines to be learnt here; brush shape and dynamics, GT pen control, colour sampling etc. I find hair selection extremely difficult and as someone who perfers Photomontaging to Photographic Realism I tend to rush it and try to find the quickest most satisfying results rather than the most natural.

Thanks for that Becky, I know you meant no harm or offence too - I didn't sleep too well knowing that I'd upset another human being which wasn't my intention at all. Water under the bridge eh?

Re: Selecting hair
Absolutely, there's no real call for sabre-rattling here. The written word is so easily misinterpreted, like Tabs says I too wish we could communicate through spoken language.

Re: Selecting hair
Becky, I wish I owned a graphic tablet. But I get fair fair results with pushing around the painted hairs with the Smudge tool.

Here's a link to a terrific tutorial on making fur, the principals work for hair, too.
