Re: Epstein's torso steam drill help
It took me longer resizing it to post. A hard hat with a rust surface I did a while ago.

Oh dear. That blew up in my face. I can't get the metalness in Daz Studio but that rust is still beautiful. Back to the drawing board.

Re: Epstein's torso steam drill help
My experience with 3D is limited to a movie I watched many years ago... but I find this thread extremely interesting.

How long was that. 3d coat, apply, maps to Daz, apply. Render both programs. Crop, minimise, resize and post here. 10 mins?

Loyd, given your ability to animate so beautifully, this would be a plus in your camp. It is a lot of learning though. As David pointed out before, i've been learning for years...but I learn like an artist. I chase after the simplest form of reaching realism so my training was definitely not structure. If I did it all again, I would definitely discipline myself to order. I have however, created this weird pipeline of programs that I use to achieve what I am after and use only the things that I am familiar with in any given program. Like a pavement special artist...lol.

This is a learning curve for me reading these posts. Keep them up. Incredible work Dwindt. Are you an engineer by profession? Amazing precision

I think we all do. Photoshop alone has all sorts of tools which I quite simply don't need because they have no part in my particular work requirements. I look at them to find out what they do and if it isn't relevant to my requirements (such as HDR, Advanced brush creation, advanced typography, most of Photoshop video and most of photoshop 3D) then I ignore it and use what comes naturally. I know they are there and if I exceptionally find a need for one I can do a quick study focused just on what I need for that project.

If I tried to be a master of all the different apps I use I would go crazy with frustration.

Thank you Tooquilos. Ha..lol, I wish. I qualified in Lose Control, (Safety and Health). I'm now a ship planner. I segregate load on container vessels as well as co-ordinate import and export on and off vessels and through the container terminal. Computer work.

Any time I can offer advise, I would love to help but be warned, I am a bush mechanic. All 3D programs are very similar though.

Thank you Frank.

I only hope that Steve doesn't think i'm trying to promote anything other than "cheating " in Photoshop. That's where it all started and believe you me, I don't believe there are many 3D artists that don't use Photoshop...a lot!

A great point David. I think more artists should take note of that. If painting, why not blend oil paints over water paints. Just don't apply it the other way around. You have all these wonderful tools available. Don't allow your ability to be suppressed by your imagination, but follow procedures: if that makes sense.

Re: Epstein's torso steam drill help
Like I said, I do get side tracked. The drill has been put on hold but definitely not forgotten.

Moses in the bulrushes: It took about 2 weeks to prepare, convert maps and tweak the 3D models for this image. I couldn't find a suitable floating crib for Moses. It was made out of papyrus reeds however most images of the scene depict a basket of sorts. So I modeled his crib from scratch and textured it myself in Photoshop, as it gave me a better result than I was getting from alternate software.

It is a 99.9% untouched iRay render. Strange thing about the image is the figure that appeared under the Acacia tree in the middle ground, in front of the camels face. I never put it there!? Nice touch. Thank you Lord!

Hello all. The steam drill hasn't been forgotten. I decided I needed to learn Modo shader tree even though I rendered these images in good old Daz. The steam drill hasn't progressed much since last post. I though it needed a crate to be transported in.

Re: Epstein's torso steam drill help
Earlier on in this post, I mentioned using 3D Coat to texture my uv maps....and I initially textured the box in the same way but due to inadequate understanding of methods available, I had to apply all the texture maps to each individual plank, which took a great deal of time.

I therefore reverted to the old method and turned to trusty Photoshop, opened my uv maps and textured them manually. I'm glad I did because I was able to have a lot of control over the placement of my textures. Once the texture map is done, I am able to automatically create 2 more of the required maps, namely the bump and the normal. In actual fact, with a couple tweaks, I can easily produce an albedo map to. (A diffuse map or colour map whereby you reduce the amount of highlight and shadows of your reference photo.) The detail, light, shadow, ambient occlusion, specular lights etc is rendered by your software, simulating the users dialed in lighting and eliminating any confusion of shadows and light from the original reference picture.

Now that all the uv maps are in 1 plain and textured adequately, I have a pretty convincing wood base for my mesh.

My next stage...when ever that will be??? is to take this base texture into 3DCoat and "mess it up!" I want dust on it, some dings and maybe mess the alignments of the planks up to try and create authenticity.

Maybe 1 day...or year...i'll be able to pack the steam drill in the crate for transportation...lol. Don't wait up though!

Re: Epstein's torso steam drill help
The crate is very well done Ken. The small detail of the text being slightly displaced adds to the authenticity. Im not familiar with 3D Coat. I make/alter most of mine in PS then create a new material in Cinema and import it. Sometimes I use Element 3D to texture it but its a world I need to explore and understand so much more. I feel Ive barely scratched the surface.

Ive been using/learning/fumbling with cinema 4D last few months. Half the times I feel lost but eventually I find my way. Most of what I have achieved so far is more arse than class but with each one I pick up something new and then apply it the next time.

I made this chair by photographing my real one from several angles and used those images for reference.
