Re: cameras
Dunno. I have the manual and it's a bit technical and doesn't explain the jargon. (I'm blonde)

The flash has a few settings does it not? Maybe it needs to be on a different setting.

Re: cameras
As far as I know, apart from manually invoking the flash, there aren't any settings on the built in one.

I rarely use it unless it's for a quick shot of something or used as fill-in.

Re: cameras
Help! Is there a nice user friendly guide to using a digital SLR? The little book I got with the camera is a mystery and I've messed around with it a lot but what it seems to do doesn't represent what the manual seems to say. I take pictures in low light and the shutter stays open for a long time and stuff like that so the image is rubbish. I try an external flash and can't get that right either. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

By the way I like to take pickies of wildlife especially moths which require a configuration which obviously involves low light but this expensive piece of kit won't fire the flash in low light! The lens just keeps going in and out and the thing won't fire. It's great in daylight when the sun is shining but not otherwise. Have I bought a fairweather camera ?

Sorry to be so thick but I just need a decent easily understandable book to help me out so if you could suggest one to stop me taking a long time in Waterstones bookshop I would be really grateful.

Maybe I just need to take an evening class in this sort of thing. I can explain the origin of red shift, resolve Olbers paradox and recognise the elephant hawkmoth larve when I see it but I can't do teckie stuff. And I'm an IT support officer ... help!!!

Re: cameras
What mode are you shooting in? If you are shooting in any of the 'creative modes' (P, Av, Tv, M) you have to pop up the flash yourself. In the green mode or the other auto modes the flash should pop up when needed. Also, in the aperture priority mode the default is for the camera to expose for the background and fill flash for the foreground - this can give some very long exposures.

Also, when I got my camera I soon got very frustrated with the built-in flash. The lens I had at the time partially blocked it at the widest angle and when it didn't the flash was really wimpy anyway.

Can't think of any friendly guides at the moment, but I'm sure there have to be some floating around the net.

Re: cameras
The Magic Lantern book is the one I was recommended to buy - for the 20D, same author.

Re: cameras
I ordered mine online and I am hoping it will be here next week.

I am happy to talk to someone else who has an SLR they don't understand I have been knee deep in ISO etc. F/stops are another little mystery. I AM having a blast with it tho. You sound like you have already bought all sorts of accessories? I really like insect photos. They are too cool. Do you have a macro lens?

My last P&S had ISO and some other adjustments but nothing like this. I can't wait for my book to get here.

Re: cameras
Haven't got a macro lens just the one with the camera but it takes good close up stuff.

I'll get sugaring in the garden this weekend and see what comes along

Aha! A cunning mixture of dark demerara sugar, black treacle, Almond essence and ....... a few drops of dark rum. I'm still waiting for moths to turn up as I write but I hope to have some good pickies with the Canon. If I can suss out photo's at night then day time should be a breeze

Small objects of desire..

A colleague came in sporting this on his 300D. It's a little pricey (c£300) but would replace all 3 of my lenses, not to mention the addition of macro. I'm very tempted!
