Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
First of all Dennis, I'm very sad to hear about your brother's inoperable brain tumour: it's very humbling with a great sense of impotence (like the Ukraine) to watch something you love slowly die. "Any suggestions," well it certainly doesn't look like as if someone has spent days on the above image; however, I do appreciate the effort you have put into this. 1. Not enough detail: it's viewed from too afar. 2. The capsule does not seem "anchored" in the water, and neither does it seem realistic. 3. It could do with some eye candy. |

Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
Thanks Michael. Maybe it was just a waste of time. I did learn some things though and that's how to do turbulence maps for water in a 3D render. The capsule is the same I used in "A bumpy landing challenge" and the silhouette of the capsule is the same proportion as that of the Gemini. The doors wouldn't open like that though. I'm not sure I understand the anchoring of the capsule in the water. The view was very hard. I felt I had to lower the helicopter to much in order to capture the capsule, water turbulence and helicopter. In 3D, it is very difficult to create a vast plain of water, such as the ocean, without getting repetition in wave pattern. This is the 3rd ocean plain I tried. Having said that, I should have tried Vue. That program has nice sea plains. What type of eye candy. A mermaid...lol. My first thought, considering it is you who is commenting, was a "bomb shell!" which made me think of a mermaid...thanks Michael. I think this ones for the trash can. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

I've just revisited this image. After seeing it again after not starring at it for hours on end, I retract my disappointment. I'm very happy with it... If anything, I'll rework the rear rotor blades. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
This is the image I rendered for challenge 905 but never posted It. It seems my system gobbled it up so I rendered it again. Thought it was a better image and worthwhile showing. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Thank you Lloyd. Have you ever stumbled across Flowscape. Be useful background tool for your animations...very simple and cheap. I did a still image using it for present challenge; Golden Gate. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Dennis - Flowscape looks like fun. I had a look around their website but was unable to find an answer to my questions, perhaps you can help me. Can you import a starting background image, a jpg and or gif? Can you export a finished image as a jpg or gif? Thanks... |

Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
It is Steve. Can spend hours fiddling with it. Lloyd, it's classed as a game and not a graphic package so it is particular about what you can do with it. You can import image plains. The image plain must be a 3D plain saved in a package of your choice. Imported into Flowscape, you apply your desired image. The unwanted bits can be excluded with an alpha map. Don't let the alpha map confuse you. Imagine a photo of a soccer ball lying on the ground that you want to have in a Flowscape scene. You create a 3d plain, apply the photo of the soccer ball to it. In your photo editing program of choice, mask the soccer ball. Once masked, fill the soccer ball with 100% white; invert the mask and fill the soccer ball back ground with 100% black. That's your alpha. Save it as a .png file. That alpha is applied to the 3D plain that you created, together with the alpha map, in your desired 3D program. Blender is a very powerful, free 3D package that is able to save the 3D plain and the image and alpha map together in the same folder that contains the 3D plain object and the image and alpha map. Blender or similar, will create a .mtl file (material file). The 3D plain object (.obj file) is imported into Flowscape, which in turn marries the material file (.mtl) to the plain and places the 3D plain and cut out soccer ball into your scene. There you can position it where you want. The material file must be in the correct format otherwise the image and alpha will not show. I imagine that if you create a cylinder and apply the above principles, it may work as a 360 back ground, otherwise, a big 3D plain would work by placing it 180 to the scenes camera. Flowscape will save a 7680x4320.png file. The image I posted for challenge 906 was originally 26 mbs. You can also save an animation of the scene, with basic camera tracking. I haven't mastered the .mtl file yet but you can import 3D models into it as well. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/316051/flowscape-and-daz-studio-so-many-backdrops/p7 _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Thanks Dennis...! If I were twenty years younger I would have to try it... unfortunately this old dog has learned his last 'new tricks'. Sorry that you had to go to so much trouble to provide answers to my questions. |

You're more than welcome Lloyd. I would have loved to see what you could do with it. You're clips are so creative. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

I've had Flowscape for years. Great fun, but never been able to do anything very useful with it. The areas it creates always seem too small. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

You can make your draw size smaller. It appears as though you have a large terrain. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Yes. I tried That. Found it rather unsatisfactory. Not sure why. If I want to create a terrain I usually use TerraRay. It's harder and more complex but much more flexible and I much prefer the results. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Dennis, quite an interesting little program with lots of hidden goodies, as Steve said lots of fun for $10.00. Will probably incorporate it in a Friday challenge somewhere down the road |

Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
Bird watching on the beach - So am I. Daz has released Genesis 9 so all you fanatics, dig out your wallets and prepare for the next flood of updates. I played with G9F last night. It has pros and cons. It does look great but so could G8 and G8.1. It puts a strain on my aging i7; 3.4Mhz; 8 core; GTX1070ti. Until I have the content equivilent to what I have for G8 and the resources to play with G9, I believe I will be sticking to G8. Not because I prefer G8 but because that is what my wallet can afford. G8 and G9 have different skeleton rigs and therefore content for G8 cannot be used on G9, without manipulating it. It also has less texture groups plus other differences. It will be interesting to see how the series unfolds. I think the task at hand will define which model I use and presently, that will be the more affordable one....but one day, who knows...just before 10 comes out. Here's my first render with G9! _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

The hard light line across the forehead and chest is my lack of understanding the fine tuning of the various texture maps that I applied to the model. I do enjoy the assymetry option that this model offers. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Daz Studio - worth it or not
I never intended to try a comparassion between the 2 models, namely G9 and G8.1, so I never saved the lighting, camera or pose. I have attempted to pose both as close as possible, The costume is made for G9 so it doesn't fit G8.1, so I manipulated it to fit in Zbrush. I believe, on any given day, the 1 model could compete with the other but you be the judge. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |
