Quick mask
Hi, I just bought your book and am very excited to learn all the techniques! I've never used the Quick mask before and I tried to do Quick Mask 1: better selection. I switched to Quick Mask at the bottom of the tool bar, and then double clicked to choose selected areas at 50%. Then i switched to the brush tool to begin to trace, but when I use the brush I dont see red or anything at all. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.
Christina

Re: Quick mask
Christina,

(as Steve doesn't do weekends, I'll interject and see if I can help, he'd be disappointed if I didn't add my $0.02 worth)

It sounds like you're doing everything right with setting the QM up, the most likely reason is that you have the foreground colour set to white (palettes stay associated with certain tools, so even if you checked before-hand, switching to brush mode may have changed it, I'm forever doing it). In QM, white erases the mask, so if there's nothing there to start off with, you won't see anything happening. Press the X key to switch the palette to black and try again.

Hope this helps,

David

Re: Quick mask
I agree exactly with what David says, except I'd recommend pressing D to set the foreground and background to their default of black and white. Either way, you need to be painting with black!

If this still doesn't work, are you able to send us a screen grab of what you're doing?

Re: Quick mask
I read with interest the advice on Quick mask, however as a newby I still have a problem with it: I can select an area OK but when I cut or copy it it only takes about 50% of the density of the image so my new layer is ghostly transparent. If I choose the background and cut that then the background disappears 100% (as required) but again about half the density of the unselected area disappears, too.
This is all odd as it used to work just fine for me. Hope it makes sense

Re: Quick mask
Denny,

Make sure the opacity of the brush is 100%.

Both opacity and flow are 100% , mode is normal. Tried it with a different image but still no solution

And now, without having made any discernable change to any settings . . . it is working as it should! I'm off home to poner the ways of PCs. Merry Christmas to you all
