Monitor Advice Needed...
I am having a nightmare time at the mo. My PC is doing all kinds of crazy things incl. changing the screen refresh rate/resolution irratically making it impossible to spend more than 10 mins on the thing without giving yourself a raging migraine, hence my lack of involvement in the Friday Challenge recently.
I have consulted a few people who THINK they know what they are talking about (even though all the advice I have received seems to contradict each other )
It seems though that a common statement is that I need a new monitor OR graphics card (??)
Anyone got any advice as to which type of monitor is best to go for? I have about £300 to spend. I have looked and everyone seems to have their own ideas as to the best. And hey I trust you guys

Tabs,

On that budget, defintely steer clear of TFT screens, at that price you will be disappointed with the display.

Have a look at some of the more popular CRT screens, Iiyama do some reasonably priced 17" screens, as do LG. You may even be able to buy both a card and a screen with £300 and have change for chips on the way home.

I wouldn't splash out any money just yet Tabitha, check for viruses first and ensure you have the latest virus definitions because it might just be that rather than faulty equipment.

If after a thorough virus scan the problem remains check your monitor properties via Control Panel>Display click on the "Settings" tab and then click on the "Adavanced" button click on the "Monitor" tab and ensure that the monitor displayed is the same as the make of your monitor and that you have the right driver installed. If not you will have to reinstall the monitor drivers. Also always check the cables are properly connected to the computer and the monitor.

If it's not that then it could be your GFX card which might have dislodged from the AGP port or it's settings might be wrong - try reinstalling the GFX card drivers. If that doesn't help then take it down to an expert rather than rushing off to buy equipment you might not really need.

Thanks Maiden and Trinty.
I have checked for the Virus etc. That was my first thought because of the way the settings kept changing themselves, but alas that would have been the easy solution.
I have reinstalled the drivers 3 or 4 times so far as sometimes the monitor just crashes, the PC is still working but the only way I can get the monitor on again is my switching off. It then prompts me that my NVIDIA driver is corrupted, so I uninstall/install a new one. That is where the suggestion that my card is dying on me (??) comes from.
Not only that but my monitor is also making a high pitched buzzing noise which is soooo irritating, indicating that it is not well too.
I have had this PC for the last 3.5yrs and I have never had any trouble so far, but it seems that everything is going at once

BTW Trin, at the moment the chips sound like a much better idea than the monitor!!

Re: Monitor Advice Needed...
Seems like you tried all the usual suspects but I doubt very much that both your gfx card and the monitor are playing up simutaneously.

If you have an old monitor that you know works, or have a friend who could lend you one you could test that one on your system and if all works fine (remembering to change the monitor driver for the test monitor) then it's a good bet your monitor is at fault and will need replacing.

You say you have replaced the gfx card with a new one so it's unlikely to be that unless of course your motherboard has blown a chip. So test the monitor (as above) and borrow a gfx card that is known to work and if the problem is still there then it will be either BIOS, The motherboard, or a very persistant virus.

I would suggest that you check with the graphics card manufacture's website to make sure you have the latest drivers for your card.

Re: Monitor Advice Needed...
Spend less than double that and you could get yourself a shiny new Mac with a monitor built in.

Just a thought.
