Avatar Problems
Can anyone tell me how to set up an avatar? I have used them in the past, but I cannot seem to upload a picture on this forum. (I am on a Mac). Thank You for your time. Sincerely, -CD

Re: Avatar Problems
You can't actually upload to the forum. The avatars are merely hyperlinks to personal webspace.

Re: Avatar Problems
Thanks for your reply. I do have web site however the photo I was hoping to use is not on that site. Just so I understand, do I need to put the photo in question on my site?

Thank you for your help. - CD

Re: Avatar Problems
Yes, Curious Dreamer, you would have to upload your avatar image to your web host and then hyperlink to it via your Personal settings on this forum.

Perhaps it's an idea that Steve has a word with the webdesigner to add an uploader for the forums avatars - but that would depend upon how much webspace they have allocated.

I don't know why avatars work in that strange way. After all, plenty of other graphics are uploaded and stored locally. I'll have a word with the designer of the SimpleForum software.

In the interim, you could try attaching the image to a forum post and making a note of the address, then use it in the profile dialog.

There's nothing wrong with the way the avatars are displayed - it's just there is some confusion about how to post an avatar from what I understand.

The problem is two-fold:

a: The Avatar is required to be remote linked from the person's website (ie http://www.mywebsite.com/images/my_avatar.jpg) the problem with this is if the web host doesn't allow remote linking (Tripod & Angelfire for example don't)

b: The way an image is posted on the board requires the special "img://" tag within the square parentheses brackets where the "img://" tag replaces the "http://" of the url. This could be confusing if people think they have to do the same with their Avatar link. This isn't the case as the Avatar link will be a standard http://your_url link.

If people are still having a problem then may I suggest that the webdesigner adds a simple avatar uploader with a size restriction. That way people can then upload their Avatar to Steve's webspace where the board itself will host the image rather like the smilies and message icons.

Becky

Re: Avatar Problems

If you dont have personal webspace to load your image in you could use this site http://www.photobucket.com registration is free of charge and they give you a few Mb of space to store your images.

Re: Avatar Problems
That's an excellent suggestion Chris and one that I had overlooked.

Sounds great, Chris - I hadn't come across that site before.

So... where's your avatar?

If anyone's interested - and I understand if you aren't - the word 'avatar' is Indian, and describes a Hindu deity when he takes human or animal form (specifically Vishnu, who was into that sort of thing in a big way). Hence it came to mean a temporary state of existence, particularly when giving bodily form to an abstract idea. And, so, to mean the physical representation of virtual people such as you lot.

Re: Avatar Problems
Becky, I stumbled across the site couple of days ago. I have just signed myself up to undertake a Basic Photography course and wanted somewhere to post photos. I have just purchased myself a nice shiny new Canon 300D but dont know what I am doing with it yet. I will let you know if I produce any decent images and you can offer a critique if you dont mind.

Steve, I didn't want to frighten you all with a picture of my face. Mind you, halloween has passed now
