Colour change problem
Hi everyone,

I need to make this candle stick silver! I've tried match colour. And I've tried curves etc.

But I'm not sure what would be the right way to do it. Any advice please?

Thanks all
Cara

Re: Colour change problem
I did this one really quickly by selecting the candle stick, making a stepped line in curves (Instant metal using Curves section of the book) then adding a bit of plastic wrap, and a little bit of dodge and burn!

It would probably look a lot better with a bit more time spent on it!

Thank you Born2Run, but it just doen'st look natural, the bottom bit is just too white... I can't just paint it... grrrrr very frustrating it has to look natural

The reason the base looks out of place is because it's too flat, the original material didn't reflect much of its surroundings. By adding a reflection, it gives the impression that the surface is shiny.

Re: Colour change problem
CaraDunn, that looks fantastic - a really good solution. While David's suggestion certainly helps it look less flat, I'd solve this one by simply selecting the base of the candlestick and increasing the contrast. Also, you might like to take out a little of the greenish tint with Curves while you're at it:

Re: Colour change problem

Here's my attempt.

Used to the Pen Tool to create a path of the candlestick made a selection and copied to a new layer.

Used Image>Adjustment>Replace Color To select the red and reduce the saturation.

Added a stepped Curves adjustment layer as a clipping mask
as well as a Brightness & Contrast increasing both the brightness and contrast.

I also made two copies of the original layer and made them a Clipping Mask to the candlestick layer setting the blending mode of one to Soft light at 33% opacity and the other to Vivid Light at 33% opacity and nudged both of them over to act as a reflection for the surrounding area.

Maiden, that's spectacular. Not to say specular, ha ha. A great improvement.

…but remember to take out the red reflection in the slab it's standing on!

Yes I see what you mean - I used Replace Color to select the red hues and desaturated them and then used the History Brush to restore everything but the candlestick and its reflection

WOW!

Thanks so much everyone, I'll use a bit of everything!! I'll try the contrast Steve, and David I'll try and create some reflections. Maiden how on earth did you do that... and remember every step you did? I put layer over layer and changed "this" and "that"... and then "this" again... lol

I never know how far I can go with an image before I better stop and start over. I keep checking the channels, incase I've wiped one by accident.....

I found out before I left the office, they want to use it A5... so it has to look real... I'll post the final tomorrow I guess.

Thanks again all
xx

AAAAAAAAAARGH most everyone is happy with it.... but now they want it to look like the other Lacquer silver of the other objects in the shot!

RAAAR its going to the repro house but I'll go with and watch him do it!

Cor, they're a hard to please bunch and no mistake.

I did try to match the lacquer of the other silver objects but it was difficult without losing the specular highlights and making the candlestick look flat and uninteresting.

Re: Colour change problem
That's why, I think, CaraDunn's version worked better - although yours looked beautiful, Becky, the silver candlestick was out of place among the duller objects surrounding it.

Re: Colour change problem
Yes, I was aware of it standing out as being too shiny but I couldn't locate the Photoshop plugin for "Dulling Spray"

Update... "they" now asked me to remove it all together... it wasn't suppose to be in the shot... ! hmmm a day in the office. I wish I was freelance.

And you think that would avoid awkward clients, do you?
