Gutters
Perhaps this question is out of place here I am creating a document intended for publication. It is a grid of half inch squares that will need to be cut apart. I am told I need to leave "gutters" between the squares for the printer. I hope I am not being to dumb here, but how do I define such gutters?

Re: Gutters
Not out of place at all! First, you need to ask your printers what size gutter they need. Will the image on each square bleed off the edge? Or is everything contained within the square? If there's bleed, this is to allow for slight inaccuracies in printing and cutting. But if everything's self contained, then you don't really need the gutters at all - it's just doubling the number of cuts required to finish the job.

Assuming gutters are required, it's just a question of spacing out the squares and adding crop marks outside the printing area to show where to guillotine.

Here's a quick example: you'll notice that, in each case, the image is slightly larger than the crop area. This is the 'bleed' area, which will be cropped off after printing.
