When is a photomontage not a photomontage? !
Hi Steve I noticed the cover for today's G2 credits your Xmas image as 'Illustration by' instead of the usual 'Photomontage by' Any reason? (just curious !) _________________ |

Any drawing, photomontage, etc. used to depict a story or theme is an illustration. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

I think it's more a case of whoever happens to write the byline that day. There's a new art team on G2, and the new design means this is the first montage that's been on the cover, so they haven't had to think about it before. Alan Rusbridger, the editor of The Guardian, always insists that my montages are labelled clearly as 'photomontage' - even when, as is often the case, there isn't a single real photographic element in the whole thing. I imagine he'll have told them off at the editorial meeting this morning! |

Yeah - thats what I meant - I regularly spot your work in the Guardian, and, like you say, even when its an illustration, with no photographs - such as the "CNUT" one (a favourite of mine), it was always labelled "photomontage by..". I suspected it was related to the new Berliner format Thanks ! _________________ |

Hmmm... Well I understand the term photomontage as for illustration aren't the two interchangable? As in illustrating a point via the use of images. I know you can't use the term photomontage when we are talking about a drawn image or a CG image, but what is your point of view Steve? Does it upset you when it's labelled "wrong" if that's the right word. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: When is a photomontage not a photomontage? !
It's a fine line. Most of my stuff that appears in magazines is described as illustration, because it's illustrating the story - and that's the term traditionally used for it. Newspapers prefer to call it photomontage, because they're all very wary of charges of manipulating the truth (ha ha, whatever that is) through edited photographs. So every time a photograph has been altered, even if it's blindingly obvious, they'll insist on calling it a photomontage to draw attention to the fact. Personally, I don't mind what they call it, as long as they spell my name right! |
