Aarrrg.. need help with erasing background
Ok. I am failry adpet at photoshop, being self taught. Steve's book has been great, but I can't seem to get this little chore done properly. This house-logo needs to be pulled off of the white background. The white inside the house can stay. I have painstakingly pixeled my eyes to death trying to pull the white off of the "streaks" but when I paste it into a new, transparent BG, it looks like..umm..it looks bad. I know there has to be a simple way to do this. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? ![]() |

Just use the magic wand set to 10, inverse the selection, cut the selection, paste to a new file with a transparant background then use save for web to optimize. Note I don't think jpg can have a transparant background. and I guess that it would be good to remove the white I left out. :-\ ![]() |

The Magic Wand's slection is also affected by the Eyedropper Tool's (I) "Sample Size" selected from it's Options Bar. If the Sample Size is set to "Point Sample" in the Eyedropper Tool's Option Bar then the Magic Wand's selection with be based upon individual pixel colour and the size of the selection determined by the Tolerance setting in the Magic Wand's Options Bar. If it's set to "3 by 3 Average" the Magic Wand will select a number of pixels based upon that average and the Tolerance setting, and if the Eyedropper Tool is set to "5 by 5 Average" then once again the Magic Wand takes that into account when making it's selection. Go ahead give it a try - try making the exact same Magic Wand selection after changing the Eyedropper's Sample Size and see how much of a difference it makes. Setting the Eyedropper Tool's Sample Size to a 3 by 3 or a 5 by 5 average is best used when making a selection of an area of graduated tones like selecting a blue sky. Re: Aarrrg.. need help with erasing background
As for your selection all I did was to expand the Canvas Size and create a new layer behind filled with white, then merged the two layers together this created a wider white border all round your logo so as to make Magic Wand selection easier and not have unselected areas of white after the final cut. Set the Magic Wand Tool to a Tolerance of 24 with Anti-Alias and Contiguous checked. Select the white area with the Wand and press "Delete" twice. First time to clear to the white and the second time to delete the fringe area. If you wanted to select the white within the house as well then uncheck Contiguous before you use the Magic Wand. However, displaying it here would create a problem when being saved in regards to chosing the correct Matte, if "None" is selected you will ultimately end up with a jagged edge, if White or any colour that contrasts with the background is selected we end up with the same problem as the white fringe you had earlier, so knowing what the background colour of the place where you wish to display your logo is important in creating smooth edges. You might want to save the logo with different Mattes to suit different backgrounds. ![]() here's one save with the Matte colour #D1DEEC same as the background. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |
