Rust, grime and decay
Evening All,
I am trying to work my way through the book- but hit a snag. On page 188 I have opened the sign- using the Alpha channel, but when I try to add "lighting effects" it is greyed out. If I switch to RGB I can use the lighting effects but the sign is no longer visible. Hav'nt found a way around it.
Any help appreciated.

You've almost got it. The lighting effects aren't applied to the alpha channel, they're applied to the blank layer. In the Lighting effects dialog, choose Alpha 1 as the Texture Channel, you will see the effect in the preview window.
