Page 256 Timber floors with varnish. Problem
Hi, I am following the instructions on page 256 trying to make the wood into a paneled floor. Steps 1, 2 & 3 are going OK, but when I do step 4 and create a new layer of the irregular length panels the embossing effect that made the vertical dark joins doesn't show on the horizontal panel ends. What am I doing wrong. Below is a screen grab of the excise so far showing my layers. As you can see from the thumbnails Layer 3 is has the irregular lengths but the ends are not showing up. ![]() |

I suspect your problem lies with your Blending Options, Paul. Double Click on your Layer Effect Icon in the Layer Palette to bring up the Blending Options and check to see if you have the same options checked as this illustration ![]() in particular 'Transparency Shapes Layers' has to be checked for the effect to work. and see if that helps. By the way Paul are you female or is that just one of your images you have chosen for your avatar? _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Thanks again Maiden. My settings are the same as your example. I noticed that changing the angle in the Bevel and Emboss settings helped, but that seems to be a global setting and it effected other layers so whilst I got the effect I wanted, I lost the effect on the other layer. No I'm not female, but I thought the girl was cuter than the kitten I had before ![]() |

It's a nice avatar Paul and that's why I asked as you don't normally get women called 'Paul' but I thought I'd check first as I didn't want to make any assumptions of gender especially as we have a current spate of people using their own photo as avatars. As for your Bevel and Emboss settings it shouldn't really matter that much what angle is set unless you had it set to a very shallow lighting or lighting directly from above, but you can alter the angle of the lighting independent of the Global Lighting for an individal layer by just unchecking the 'Use Global Light' checkbox as illustrated: ![]() However as that shouldn't really be necessary I suspect your problem is a little more complex and I confess to being stumped. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Thanks again. You have sorted out my problem. When I said the lighting seemed to be global I never even noticed the Use Global Light check box. Now when I adjust it independantly I get the correct effect. Below is the final result. I'm quite happy with it. ![]() |

That's great! Love the shadow. Maybe blur the reflection a little and alter the blend mode. It appears to be lightening the gaps between the slats, which of course wouldn't happen. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |
