Problem with Quickmask
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? Following Steve's instructions in his book, I tried to select my car in this photo. Below are the three steps according to how I read them in the book. Why doesn't the image show up fully in the third picture?

Quickmask selected, figure traced and filled in:

Quickmask deselected, leaving outline:

New layer created from selection and background removed:

I'm perplexed. Am I missing a step?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Problem with Quickmask
Jim,

Looks to me as if you don't have the Brush tool set to 100% opacity. When you look at the original QuickMask screen grab, you can see that the red is patchy, not solid. Setting a lower opacity is useful for making semi-transparent selections, but doesn't help you here!

You could also use the fill method described in the book (on the wasp). Do the outline, use the Magic Wand to select the interior area of the car, expand by a few pixels and then fill with black.

Re: Problem with Quickmask
Thanks for the replies. I'm still having problems with the car not showing up 100%, even with the opacity of the brush set at 100%. Do I have to keep painting over the car until the red is solid? That doesn't appear to be the case in the book. Also, after exiting QuickMask and hitting control-J (I'm on a Mac, btw), the new layer that is created includes the background with the car deleted. In order to save the car into a new layer, I have to hit control-shift-I to invert it. But that isn't the instruction in the book. Now I'm really confused!

Even though your instructions are very clear and precise, I feel like there must be something I'm still not doing right.

David, your suggestion works nicely for filling in the car after making the outline. But now it's the outline I'm having a problem with even though I have the opacity set to 100% on the brush.

Thanks again for the help!

Re: Problem with Quickmask
You might want to check the flow of the brush. It defaults to 50% but you may need to increase it a little.

Re: Problem with Quickmask
Well, selecting 100% for both the opacity and flow seems to work fine, but then I don't get the transparent color in order to see the edges that I'm tracing.

Hmmm...

Try the Pen Tool, perhaps..

Re: Problem with Quickmask
Sounds to me like you don't have QuickMask set up correctly - and this could answer both your questions.

First, double-click the QuickMask icon at the bottom of the toolbar and make sure the opacity is set to around 50%. If, as I suspect, you have it set to 100%, you'll be getting a solid red overlay which won't allow you to see the image underneath. The opacity setting here only determines how QuickMask looks, not how it works.

Second, if you're getting the the background rather than the car selected, you have QuickMask set to the default of Masked Areas, rather than Selected Areas. I recommend this setting on the first QuickMask page, but it's easy to overlook it.

This is how your setup should look:

Re: Problem with Quickmask
Steve, I SWEAR I had the options set up that way the first time I tried!! I don't know what happened, but somehow it got reset back to "Masked Areas" (and yes, I had the opacity set at 100%).

I KNEW I was overlooking something simple, and it was the first step for this particular task.

It is now working just as you instructed in the book. Thanks!
