No layers
Hi all,

Started up Photoshop this morning and treid to start a new project. For some reason, the program won't let me make any layers! Everything is going on the background. As a bonus, my other .psd documents don't show layers either. Can anyone solve this one?

Thanks

Jeff

Re: No layers
Weird. Not come across this one. Er… you sure you're using Photoshop, and not M$ Word?

Photoshop 7 for sure. Worked great one day, the next not at all. A most baffling situation

Re: No layers
It isn't that it's somehow become fixed in a mode such as Indexed color (Image>Mode)?

Re: No layers
This won't clear things up, but I can be a bit more specific I can create layers, but I can't put anything on them. No matter what I choose, the "stuff" all drops on to the backgound layer. Even in text mode, where it's own layer is created, the text itself drops to the background. I can't edit any of the phantom layers Arrgh!

Re: No layers
Is it possible that you're working on a single channel, rather than the RGB composite? Otherwise, David's suggestion of being in Indexed Color mode sounds the most likely.

This is very curious. Can you post a screen shot of your setup, just in case we can spot something obvious?

I hate to expose myself as a relative Photoshop rookie, but how does one get oneself out of "indexed mode" if indeed one is stuck there?

Hi Jeff.....
under the 'Image' menu at the top.... go to 'Mode'... you'll see whether you're in 'indexed color' or not..... if you are... simply click on 'RGB' to change your format from indexed to RGB
