Help I am a newbie and cannot do step 5 in the book, I hold down
shift with the lasso tool,a little + sign comes up, I drag across the gaps on the collars, and between the sholders, but it does not stop the newspaper they are holding from being selected like it does in the book!

Welcome to the forum Grant! I'm sorry to hear your having trouble with one of the lessons in the book. I'm also a newbie to Photoshop, but the help and advice from the other subscribers on this site as well as the tremendous amount of help from Steve Caplin have advanced my skills in Photoshop exponentially!

As far as your problem with the lesson in the book, I had to open it up again to see what was going on... The only thing I can think of is that maybe you didn't inverse your selection mentioned in step 4. That would prevent you from selecting the paper.

If that doesn't solve it, be sure to check back on your post as other users with professional skills logon frequently and will help you out.

Hi Grant

Yeah, after Step 5 you are supposed to have the paper selected !!

In Step 4, the white background is selected - and some of this selection has "leaked" into the paper. By inversing the selection the opposite is true - the people are selected, but the background and paper are not.

But we want to separate the people AND their paper from the background- so we need to make the amendment in step 5.

By holding Shift, we can add the paper.
