Laptop or PC
In reference to CS2 installation, or lack there of, I'm contemplating either a new PC or laptop for photoshop CS2 only with an Intuos tablet. Any thoughts on pros and cons about photoshop on a laptop.I'm not sure how the screen quality would be, but I like the idea of the portability.
Steve, you mentioned using the graphics tablet with your PowerBook. What do you think?

(determined to have photoshop one way or another!)

Re: Laptop or PC
I agree - a Mac's certainly the best platform for Photoshop. But that's a whole religious war I don't want to start!

As to whether you get a laptop or a PC, you need to really think about how important portability is. You're paying a big premium for the ability to carry it around with you: higher purchase cost, smaller screen size, less expandability, more difficult keyboard. Sure, I use a laptop, but only when I'm going out to give lectures and demos: the rest of the time, I need my 23 inch monitor! PS is awash with palettes that all take up screen space: are you sure you'll still be able to see your image on a small monitor?

Re: Laptop or PC
Kidding aside, you're both right. From what I've heard, Macs are more reliable for PS kind of soft ware, but the version I got is for Win XP. Are they OS specific? How hard would it be to learn the Mac interface?

With a name like "Mac" it can't be too bad!

Seriously, If the software is compatible, what else can you tell me about a Mac? Thanks for your input!

Re: Laptop or PC
Software was platform specific but it looks like apple have found a way around that with Rosetta (as far as I can make out anyway)

I run both a PC laptop for portability - easier to take your work to show clients, and a G5 with 23inch screen for the rest of the time. As for the interface - not much difference in layout really, different names for certain keys (cmd / alt / etc. (thats not a key name by the way) ) but pretty easy to swap over.

Try looking on the apple site for more info and then get the best you can afford - you wont regret it - happy hunting

Re: Laptop or PC
Thank you Steve for your input. You made me realize how much I don't use my older laptop now! As for upgrades, it's less costly to by a new tower than a whole laptop.Makes sense.

David and Glen,
I believe Mac's are probably the way to go but all my computer setups are all Windows oriented and I don't think I'm ready to start over yet. Maybe a couple more headaches and I'll be convinced. Besides Glen, I hear Windows my be coming out with an "etc." key!

Thanks again everybody for your input.

Re: Laptop or PC
I'm contemplating a laptop. I'd love to own a iMac but I simply wouldn't be able to also buy the software for it that I already have on my PC.

No its NOT! And yes NO wars.

I use both a PC and a laptop. And used to work on a G4 (which by the way was hopeless). Problems upon problems with it and did Apple Tech help?
NO they ******* did not.

Laptop or PC
Steve,

I wont go into the Laptop vs-desktop vs Mac vs PC. I agree with everybody! But get the Intuos. I have two old Graphire, one (4X5 inch) at home and one at work (12 X 12). I would recommend going for the 6 X 8 as it is big enough for your arm movements, and doesn't take too much space. If you go for the laptop, yu can carry the tablet with you. Get the one with the buttons on the tablet; I tried it once and it is brilliant (you can set them to be your shift-ctrl-alt keys (or whatever Mac has...)) and you can actually put it on your lap to work! There is even a Bluetooth version.

The pressure sensitivity of those things are a major benefit (and requirement) for the Photoshop users. Go get one; not free but really worth the money. And they last longer then the computer technologies...

Pierre

PS: I just checked the Wacom site, get the Graphire 4 as it has the buttons (2) and it's cheaper then Intuos.

Re: Laptop or PC
Merci Pierre,
I actually bought the Intuos 3. Going to set it up tonight. Found a tutorial DVD for Wacom tablets and Photoshop used together. Shows you some pretty cool setup tips. Found it at photoshopcafe.com. There are some tutorials there as well on different techniques.

I hope it's okay to post other website info.
