what pad do you use...wicom?
hi all!
for those that use a pad which one do you find that works rather well with ps...and what size?

i've been looking at wicom but they are awfully expensive. i've also heard that some brands don't play out very well in photoshop (???).

I use a Wacom (I've always pronounced it Way-com but according to the 'Photoshop Guys' on Photoshop TV, it's Wah-com) Graphire 2. It's a small tablet and really precise operations can be a little wobbly but on the whole, it great and invaluable for shading, etc.

The Graphire is not massively expensive, I think they're around 60-70UKP. Once you've got the hang of it, you'll wonder how you survived without one!

Wacom's really the only one to use. I have the smallest Intuos tablet - an A6 sized active area - and I find it easily big enough, even on my 23 inch monitor. Remember what I say in the book, though: they do take a week or two to get used to. But it's worth the effort!

I also use a Wacom. I've had a Graphire model for several years and have found it to be entirely adequate. But, when it becomes necessary to replace it, I'll get the Intuos.

I've also found the smallest tablet easily big enough. In fact, I find the larger tablets require too much hand motion to suit my tastes. But, if you like to draw with large sweeping motions or have issues with small muscle motor skills, you may find the larger tablets more satisfactory.

Wacom Intuos 1 9x12 and its way too big for me. But it was very cheap. $150 had it 3 years now.

I have a cheapo small Wacom, but it works great.

I used to have an A3 GTCO one years ago but couldn't afford the desk space any more

I too have a Wacom, one of the cheaper versions without pen tilt and I must confess to not using it as much as I should.

I've tried using it a few times but I really haven't managed to get the hang of it yet ... all my photoshopping is done on the track pad on my laptop ... I don't even own a mouse .... Awwwww

Dek
There is a website that has a training DVD specifically for the Wacom tablet being used with Photoshop.
Check it out, you could get a lot more from your tablet than you think.

I hve a good old Graphire tablet (Wacom is up to Grapphire 4 now) that is 4 X 5 and I find it a bit too small for the amplitude of my hands/arms gestures. I would recommend minimum 6X8 or even 9X12, depending on your available desk space and if you want to use their mouse (which works good and never gets clogged)

I like the ability to use keys on the tablet (you can assign your shortcut keys or alt - ctrl- etc). I tried it before and really loved it. I just went on their site and saw that they now have that on a Grapphire 4 tablet (used to be only on the more expensive Intuos series).

Grapphire4 6X8 is about 200 US$, not cheap, but worth the money. And their technology last longer then the computer's! I would change mine, but it works just fine and my wife does not allow me to...

I have an intuos 3 ( 9 x 12. ) If I were to do it over I would go for a 6 x 8 which would be the perfect size. I find the 9 x 12 on the large size but got it for the same price as a 6 x 8 from e-bay. Couldn't pass up a good deal and didn't have the opportunity to try one out before purchasing.

I love my tablet and wouldn't be without it. Since I'm also a painter I didn't find there was much of a transition for me and it feels much more natural than the mouse.

I can't remember a time when I didn't use a wacom pad....at the minute I use the Graphire2 6x8 ...had it now for a couple of years and like Pierre said... this is my second computer...and still the same pad... so they are well worth the money to last so long..... before that I had 3 smaller wacom pads... wore them all out lol... I think this is about the right size for me now tho.... much better than the smaller ones.... was about £189 when I got it... I think the new Graphire4 is around the same price...and is definitely next on my Christmas list

Oh yeah, with my Northern Irish accent I've always pronounced it.. 'Whack-em!'

I've had my Wacam for a little over a month...already, the felt on the bottom of my mouse is wearing away very quickly. The corners especially have been worn down to the rubber! Is this normal, or should I purchase more felt? For a $200 investment...I want to keep it in top shape by not scratching my tablet!

I just picked up an Intuos3 4x5 tablet a few days ago. I had originally intended to get a Graphire but decided to splurge on the "better" model.

I haven't done much more than fiddle with it yet.

Heck, I'm still trying to come to grips with using Photoshop, my background has been Paint Shop Pro.

I generally don't use the mouse that comes with the pad.

My mouse has custom adjustable settings for resolution. It helps when I need to do fine work.

I never use the mouse in Photoshop... but it is handy for surfing or for other applications... I look forward to seeing sum of your fine work

I've got a cheapo Wacom 4X5 " at the mo and it's been great but I want to upgrade to an Intuos A4 with one of those lovely pens that have Pressure-sensitivity with 1,024 levels. The one I've got now is not really letting me get "in control" the way I want to, especially when you want to paint in fog or light.

As for Dek doing everything on the track pad of his laptop...............RESPECT!
