golden ball
I can't make a golden ball. Have tried curves, bevel & emboss. I can get it to look like a ball or gold but not both at the same time. Tried alpha channel with blur, tried the metal cheat from the book, tried adjustment layer. The football Pierre did looked like gold but was that because of all the angles on it?

Re: golden ball
When making any kind of shiny object, the colour is only half of the technique. The key to realism is reflections and specularity (how light is bounced off the object). Polished metal will reflect its surroundings, so with a ball, you need to curve them around its surface. Light will be intense, too as you'll know if you've ever tried to photograph a piece of jewellery.

Re: golden ball
Hi Deborah! To do good metalic effect, the trick is to have a base image that already has some significant shading in it.
Image 1 show the original I found on the net.
Image 2 shows the result after apllying: first the metal curves trick from the book and, second, a plastic wrap effect. Play with the settings and be ready to undo! It took me 3 or 4 trials. I then changed the color with the Colorize option checked in the Hue/Saturation adjustment.
Image 3: I selected with color range (in the select menu) an area that I felt need some more adjustment, and made another layer with it to play with my metallic effect.
Image 4 is the final image with the WC (that I rasterized and burn and dodged a bit to create shading on it) that I made 3D with the layer adjustment "Bevel and emboss".

If you have a chance, find a metallic object and observe the light on it, it really helps.

Re: golden ball
Pierre, thanks for your help. I found a metallic object; it was filthy so spent the next few hours cleaning!
David, thank you for your help. Yes of course reflections make a difference.
But, I still can't get it right. Filled a circle with a gold colour, added noise then a radial blur, gaussian etc. Then burn and dodge, which made it too yellow, so an off white brush for highlights, then a plastic wrap greatly faded. But I still can't make it look metallic

Re: golden ball
Hi Deborah,

Thanks to both Steve and Pierre, I have found out how to get Gold!

Follow my simple tutorial entitled "Turning non-metallic objects into gold metal effects".

Re: golden ball
I would add one thing to the very fine tutorial.
Try using a gradient map for the color to expand the hue variations.

It shows you where all the hills are.

Re: golden ball
From PS Help;
The Gradient Map command maps the equivalent grayscale range of an image to the colors of a specified gradient fill.If you specify a two-color gradient fill, for example, shadows in the image are mapped to one of the end point colors of the gradient fill, highlights are mapped to the other end point color, and midtones are mapped to the gradations in between.

Re: golden ball
thanks to David, Michael, Pierre and Tom, but am still rubbish. Have tried all the suggestions, but it seems to only work if you already have an image, this must be my 20th attempt; this time I put a reflection on the circle, I know the reflection isn't right but it's a start. It still doesn't look shiny enough. Any suggestions?

Re: golden ball
Hi Deborah,

I've taken your image and followed my own tutorial and came up with this:

this is my first post.

i think one of the issues is, as pierre somewhat suggests too, that the environment must be considered, reflections in this case but also the effect of the object being created upon it's environment. then there is the extra photoshopping to enhance, such as the complementary purple glow above my ball.

i don't know what you think of my result - took about 20 minutes - but i am a painter first and foremost and i apply painterly understanding to photoshop and all my digital creations. this piece has lots of layers - i use the medium to accomplish what i want and not be afraid to let it go wrong.

it would take much time to describe everything i did to make this shiney ball, if you are interested, then post back and i'll describe.

just a thought, i can't look at my wedding ring that my wife has given me without seeing my refelection.

also we imagine things. gold isn't actually how we imagine it to be. the alchemists have had a hard time of this for centuries. brass is usually what people imagine gold to look like.

i actually really like yours it reminded me of Helen Chadwick's installation 'The Oval Court' http://kunstonline.dk/indhold/helen_chadwick.php4

Re: golden ball
That is beautiful 'between' and yes I would like to know how you did that. And yes I did look at reflections in gold rings and see all that but it was making it really look like gold i was after which you have done

Re: golden ball
Michael Sinclair,
That's a great-looking gold ball you made in your tutorial. If I ever need something like that, I'll know how to do it, thanks to you.
