painting a wall
Is there a way to whitewash a dry stonewall. Tried putting a displacement map of the wall on a white fill, but it's not very convincing.

Cheers

Re: painting a wall
Chris,
This may not be perfect but it doesn’t look too bad.

I didn’t have an image of a dry stone wall but perhaps this flint wall will do instead. The first image is 'before' and the following image is 'after'.

Open the file and select the wall to be whitewashed. Cmd/Ctrl-J to put it on a new layer. Desaturate this new layer. You may need to adjust the curves to get a medium grey depending on how dark the original stone was.
On a new layer fill with white then add lots of Gaussian Noise. Then add a little Gaussian blur so that the noise texture is still just discernable
Clip this layer to the desaturated layer and change its mode to overlay.
Add a levels adjustment layer and pull in the sliders to the dark and light points of the histogram then move the grey slider to the left until you get something that looks right.

I didn't get an 'after' image, but I understand what you mean. Will give it a try. Thanks, really appreciated!

Re: painting a wall
Copy the original layer and change it to B&W any way you like. Set the layer mode to Multiply.
The effect of weathered to newly painted can be achieved by adding a few "white" layers as shown and setting them to Overlay. Paint into these as much or as little as you wish.

The final result will still be in colour with some shading and texture.
