PC still seems slow with 2 GB of RAM, in Photoshop CS2 why?
Hi I've recently bought a new PC from PC Specialist it said it was a AM Athlon 64X2 Dual core 3800+ Processor 2.01 gHz, 2.00 GB of RAM which companred to my old machine of just 512k RAM you would of thought it to be faster, I bought it because in photoshop I wanted to work on 24inch by 24inch size paintings I do digital art, on my old one it was very slow with 24inch by 24 inch at 300pixels/inch so thought this machine with its 2 GB would be able to handle it fast, but no seems just as slow.

Is there anyway I can see if all this memory is actually working, I've clicked on my system pon my control panel and it shows up as 2.00 GB yet why isn't this machine able to handle big digital art files, Do I still need more memory?

Phil

You did not mention your os, if it is win xp and you are working with very large file sizes it could be a combination of settings, video card capability, hard drive speed.

here is a link to a very important part of the problem, "paging file size". there are seven pages total to be read for you to determine if this is your problem. Page file info
In short,
If your computer is using the page file instead of your memory it will be slow, because of all the hard drive accesses.

I hope this helps in some way.

How large are the files you are typically working with?

My system specs are similar to yours, and haven't really had a problem as far as Photoshop handling files. (Some of which can exceed 500 mb!)

A couple of things to try:

If your computer is a custom build, you may want to check the graphics card...which if you have a powerhouse computer and a slug of a graphics card, your problem may be there.

When I purchased my computer, it came with Norton Antivirus. Which was fine, but I prefer Trend Micro. When I purchased Trend Micro Antivirus package and installed the software, my system performance went to a grinding halt! The processor usage was a consistent 70% or better with no programs open! So I contacted the manufacturer for Trend Micro, and later Norton.
Come to find out if you have more than one antivirus software running from different manufacturers, the software conflicts with each other. They end up trying to do the same processes at the same time and confuses the crap out of the CPU.

So check to see if you have multiple antivirus/spyware/etc. software installed on your system that was made from different manufacturers.

Press: CTRL, ALT, DELETE at the same time and your Windows Task Manager menu pops up.
Click Processes and see how many programs you have running at the same time. If it's more than say, 10...you may have too many unnecessary programs starting up when you turn on the computer.

To fix that:
Click the start menu, run, type: MSCONFIG in the screen.
In the System Configuration Utility, click the Services tab.
Check only the programs you WANT to start every time you turn on your PC. (Such as Antivirus and Adobe Gamma).
Uncheck everything else.

Click on the Startup tab:
Uncheck all unnecessary programs.

(You can get away with having all the items unchecked in ONLY the "Services" and "Startup" tab. Windows does not have any necessary files or .dlls in these tabs in order to properly start.)

By clicking CTRL, ALT, DELETE
go to the performance tab.
Then open Photoshop. Look to see which is being bogged down, Your CPU usage...or PF usage. Then you should be able to see what's causing the PC to drag.

Ultimately, it's either your processor or the memory. If it's the processor, there are program issues, (they may be conflicting with each other). If it's the memory, well...you shouldn't have a problem with 2 gigs of memory!

Hope this helps,
Chris

I have 1 gig of ram on a much more modest machine and I have had similar problems. The following Adobe links may be useful, I found Solution 2 on the first one gave the best result.
