putting a golf course on the moon
I've cut out a square of fairway and put it on a bumpy lunar surface. I want the fairway to follow the contours of the bumps and rocks of this surface. Tried displacement mapping but nothing really changes. Is there something I haven't thought of? Cheers Chris |

Displacement maps really are your best bet here, Chris. But maybe the surface needs to be treated in some way before being saved as maps. Can you post the two components so we can take a look? |

Re: putting a golf course on the moon
Hi Steve Before I post the images, can you tell me the best way to shrink the files to 100kb and maintain some sort of resolution? Original file size 3848 x 3002 pix at 300dpi Cheers Chris |

Re: putting a golf course on the moon
First, take it down to around 900 pixels at 72 dpi, then use Save for Web to bring it into the right size. |

Re: putting a golf course on the moon
Chris, How about copying the moon's area under the grass to a new layer, increasing the contrast and then using blend mode multiply on the grass layer? The two images didn't quite line up, but you should get the idea... BB ![]() |

Re: putting a golf course on the moon
Hi BB I had already tried this but it looked too much like green lunar rock. I think I was looking for a lazy way of contouring the grass across the moon. What do think of this effect on the image I posted? Does it work? Chris |

Chris, I think your image works. It really looks like someone layed out a piece of grass carpet to practice his putter. ![]() _________________ |

Re: putting a golf course on the moon
Chris, Try placing a copy of the moon surface layer above the grass and clipping it with the grass layer, then change the blend mode to overlay and lower the opacity to suit. This may give you what you are looking for but I think that your version is already very good. rufus By the way the problem with using a displacement map here is that the grass is too uniform to show the changes. |

Hi Rufus I tried this but it was still unconvincing. You've answered my question about dispacement maps, however. I thought it was me - I'm glad to know it was the uniform grass! Thanks to everybody for their feedback - it was really useful. Until the next problem, then! Chris |
