New Year's dilemma
I am fortunate to have had a small financial windfall this Christmas enough to buy PSCS2. However there are competing alternatives for this level of spending. 1) dump my Canon EOS 300D and buy an EOS 400D; 2) keep the 300D and buy a really good lens; 3) buy a new cover for one of my ten year old sofas; 4) wait till summer and go on holiday; 5) put it into a savings account and earn 4.XX%. I already have PS7. What are the arguments for spending it all on CS2? As my wise 93 year old mother says "Remember, you can only spend it once!" Ted |

Re: New Year's dilemma
Ted, Really, it all depends on how serious your Photoshop needs are. CS2 is certainly leaps and bounds above version 7, as you are probably aware from Cheat 3. You can, of course, upgrade which is considerably cheaper rather than buying the whole thing again. You will also have the benefit being able to try the beta of CS3. As for the camera; is there really enough of a difference between the 300 and the 400. If you were planning on buying a new lens anyway, you'd be better off doing that. Not sure about the sofa and the holiday, not really my field ![]() _________________ If you hold on to the past, sooner or later you'll lose your grip. |

Re: New Year's dilemma
Agreed with David on this one. Someone told me that digital cameras are changing so fast that they become obsolete within 18 months, not unlike computers. When you have one, you stop looking for a while!. Lenses are something else, they will last forever (or almost). For holidays, you've to France often enough ![]() For the sofa, post a picture and we'll see! Happy new year Ted! ![]() _________________ |

New Year's dilemma
You could of course stick with PS7 until CS3 is out. The smart filtering shown in the previews looks wicked. |

Re: New Year's dilemma
I know that some manufacturers offer a free upgrade if you purchase their software within a certain amount of time before their new release comes out...or offer an upgrade to their new version at a higher discount. I'm not sure if Adobe will offer this for Photoshop, though. ![]() If the lense you are looking at is similar to Meguyer's new lense...that, to me, would be about as much fun as working with CS2. As for sitting on the money in a bank, go for a CD...not a savings account. Higher return with no risk. You just can't touch the money for however long you choose; 6 months, 1, 3, 5 yrs. And if you're gonna let it sit for a few years, shoot for a medium to medium-high risk (higher return) mutual fund. Janus, thus far, has been a good one for me. That would be a great Idea for a Friday Challenge, Steve! difficult decision mate.... Chris |

Re: New Year's dilemma
Buy a new lens. Photograph the sofa. Edit it with CS2. Enter it into a competition. Put the winnings in a high-interest account. Wait for it to mature. Go on holiday. Buy CS3 with what's left over. Simple, eh? ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

I agree with David. After great consideration I suggest buying the sofa. I have even researched sofas for you and suggest this one. ![]() |

Re: New Year's dilemma
Sofa so good Marty thanks for the suggestion I'll pass it by Nicole!!! Thank you too for all the ideas and suggestions. Upgrading PS7 is not possible as it was given to me to play with by someone who had already upgraded and I am now ready to buy a full PS. I've decided sitting on savings is boring.... keeping the 300D is more practical and if you are thinking of recovering the sofa for me in photoshop it only leaves the decision between CS2 and a lens. I do play with PS more than taking pictures..... but .....if I wait for CS3 that will buy me a bit more time .... and the sales are still on! I will send Steve a picture of my dying sofa but now my challenge is to tidy up for the photo!! Ted |
