jagged edge
Is there a way of automatically drawing a jagged line with the pen tool or a selection tool without having to manually create the jagged edge? |

Re: jagged edge
Do you mean a sawtooth effect or a more random edge? _________________ If you hold on to the past, sooner or later you'll lose your grip. |

Re: jagged edge
Random edge - but I'd be interested to know how to do sawtooth, too. |

Re: jagged edge
Have a couple of stiff drinks, then try to trace a straight line with the Lasso tool! |

Re: jagged edge
Sometimes the most obvious solutions are the most elusive!! (Actually, I think it's time I invested in a graphics tablet) |

Re: jagged edge
Hi Chris, The best way that I know of to create a ragged edge would be to make a normal selection and then save it as an Alpha channel. Then go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Spatter and tweak the settings there. You apply the filter to the Alpha channel, of course. Then just Cmd/Ctrl click on the Alpha Channel to get the new selection. If it's even remotely possible that you might want to use the original selection just duplicate the Alpha Channel before you apply the filter and work from that. I’ll leave the saw-tooth edge to someone else to figure out. Gordon |

Re: jagged edge
Hi again Chris, You can also apply the filter to Quick Mask if you prefer. Gordon |

jagged edge
Hi Chris, you can do this by defining a suitable brush as shown here, for further info take a look at: http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_pro.cgi?fid=10&topic_id=1144678460 rufus ![]() |

Re: jagged edge
Hi Chris, I like the way Rufus showed. Pretty cool. The way I would probably do it though so I don't have to create a brush would be as follows: ![]() By moving with the transform tool instead of the move tool, you can repeat as many times as you need. To create a random line, I usually just draw it with the pen tool, although I must admit, I think Steve's method sounds like the best. |

Re: jagged edge
Hi Chris, Try drawing a straight line, then using Filter>Distort>Wave and setting the options to "Triangle". For the sake of completeness below is what the different settings are... apologies if it is overly simplified - esp if you have a Physics Degree! Number of generators - 1 (for sawtooth) or greater value for a more random effect (anything over 10 seems to break the line up though) Wavelength settings - these determine how closely grouped the peaks are along the line - The greater the value of either, the further apart the peaks are. The smaller the difference is between them, the more regular the effect is. Amplitude - determines the min & max height of peaks (similar to wavelength but the other way around). Again, the smaller the difference between the 2 values, the more regular the final effect will be. It's certainly quicker than waiting for the whiskey to kick in (and cheaper), just not as much fun! Re: jagged edge
Hi everyone What I love about Photoshop is that there is always more than one solution - and I think every solution to this problem has been submitted here!!! Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply, you're a very generous bunch. The approach that works for me is Babybiker's - it lets you do a random edge and sawtooth. Have a whisky on me - when I learn to animate I'll pour you a virtual one. With much thanks Chris |
