making fire
Hi
I've just crashed a Boeing 747 - now I need to set it on fire. Anybody got any ideas how to create flame or a fireball for a massive explosion?

Re: making fire
Hi Chris,
A few years ago I took this shot of some glowing embers at a bonfire party. I regularly use it for 'explosions'. Just make a feathered selection in an explosion shape, tweak the colours a bit if you like and it works very well. Putting a very blurred copy behind the explosion helps too.

I have just used it as the exhaust trail for a surface to air missile in a project that I have just been working on. To do that I stretched a selection and then deleted parts at the tail end of the selection. Putting a feathered, circular red/yellow gradient at the top for the 'heat' of the jetpipe and some highly blurred, feathered and faded very light grey clouds for the smoke gave me a convincing exhaust. That technique may well do for your explosions.

Let me know if you would like a full res (17MB) copy
Gordon

Re: making fire
Here's one I did earlier for an air safety campaign on the problem of light aircraft entering Controlled Airspace without a clearance.

Re: making fire
Sorry if these are getting a bit violent! Rocket + launcher were modelled in Cinema 4D. If anyone is thinking of going 3D this is a very good programme - just be prepared for the learning curve that you get with any 3D app.

Re: making fire
Hi
Everyone's come up trumps - as usual!
Gordon, if I could have a hi-res of your fire shot, that would be great. Can you send it to cd.berry@virgin.net - most appreciated.
Dave, thanks for the morguefile ref - what a great site.

Cheers
Chris
