Printing Problem - Background grey cast where transparency should be.
I am printing from a MacPro on an Epson 9800. I deleted the Background completely to transparency. But on the print I have a grey color cast where the paper color should be transparent. I already deleted the CS2 preference file (which ususally works) but this time it does not eliminate the grey haze. The printer driver is a ColorBurst RIP. Does anybody know an answer? I would very much appreciate that. Aloha from Hawai'i Peter. |

This is a tricky one. Chances are it's more to do with your printer settings than a Photoshop problem. There could be settings in the RIP to limit the total white content, which is frequently used to avoid burnout in printed images. One thing confuses me, though: you say you've deleted the background to transparency. The printer, however, can't handle transparency: it may be this that's partly causing the problem. Try adding a white background and flattening the image before printing, it may make a difference. |

I print all day long on a couple of 9800s and never have troubles. I always have white where I do not want colour. We never have transparency in our TIFF files. RIP software can do odd things. If I want to print in B&W my tiff still has to be RGB otherwise the output is not as expected. Does the rest of your image print as you expect? |

Hi Peter, Try the following, When you go to print, select print with preview. Set the color handling to: Let printer determine colors Set Redering intent to: Absolute Colorimetric You may want to try all of these settings, but I would start with these, especially if you do not have a calibrated color profile for your monitor and printer. If you have Let photoshop determine colors without a calibrated color profile, you may get some strange results. If at all possible, It is preferable to calibrate your equipment so your monitor, scanner, and printer will all see/show the same colors. Once that is done, I use "Let photoshop determine colors" and "Relative Colorimetric" with "Black Point Compensation" checked. I was initially suprised at how much difference it made to do a good calibration. Before I calibrated, my prints tended to have a bluish cast, and reds tended to be to orange. (Of course this will be different on your system). |

Hi Petersieg! If the suggestions posted didn't work, you may want to try a different approach. I'm thinking there may be color information in you artwork that's not viewable on your monitor, but there's just enough for your printer to catch. Try turning off all channels but one in the channels pallet and check each to see if there's any information where there shouldn't be. I've had a problem where an unwanted 'gray haze' appeared on portions of the artwork where there should have been a black solid. It only appeared when I printed the layout. Come to find out, there was a light, single brush stroke on the green channel that I forgot to delete. Go figure, after hours of sifting and searching each layer for the problem...I just checked the channels and found the problem in 20 seconds. ![]() My younger brother is stationed in Hawai'i! How can summer in Hawaii prepare you for winter in Iraq? Maybe if the insurgents start to throw surfboards and hula skirts he'll be laughing ![]() |
