Oh, oh no...Convert from web to print
I have a full-color layout in Illustrator CS3 that was created for web (RGB). Now, the client wants to print this layout in the newspaper as a Spot Red layout. (MYK) Convering the colours in not the issue as it's vector layout. Efficiency is what's hurting. Right now, I'm selecting each individual piece and removing the Cyan from that selection. Is there a way to tell Illustrator, "Put Cyan to 0% on everything?" Or possibly an export pdf option that does not include the Cyan plate? There are more than 100 objects along with a few gradients. My current method of individual selection is killing me! Thanks, --Chris |

You can certainly select all objects with the same fill colour, and adjust all of those in one go. But when you say a spot red, are you sure this is going to be made of two process colours? If so, then all four are available - why not simply print in CMYK? |

Thanks, Steve. I ended up doing just that...but the pain was that 1/2 of the group with the same colour was in the fill, the other half was in the stroke! Ugh! I had an idea that if I were to remove cyan from each swatch that was used in the colour pallet, Illustrator would then update the colours in the layout. But it seems as though Illustrator does not link the object's colour with its respective swatch colour; so it wouldn't automatically 'update' the colours in the layout. (I was thinking along the lines of a Smart Object feature when trying this idea...)
The way this newspaper publication prints is Spot on CMYK and require the artwork not to use the fourth plate. Even though all plates are available, they would charge for a four colour process if I were to include the fourth plate. They only use true spot colour inks on special occasions; for instance, true spot red is only used on Valentines Day. They are a small circulation. |
