RAW files
Got a possible client who needs retouching done on Canon RAW files. Does anyone know how different this is to working on JPEGS? Cheers Chris |

Re: RAW files
It depends how the client defines retouching. Aside from colour/lighting correction, cropping and, as of ACR 4, spot editing, there's not a great deal you can do without first saving the image in a different format, PSD, for instance. _________________ Leap and the net will appear |

Re: RAW files
And is colour/lighting correction the same process in RAW as it is with JPEG. Do I have to treat anything different? |

Re: RAW files
What software are you using to edit your RAW files with? If you are using Photoshop CS or higher you can do most of your editing within the RAW converter, especially with CS3. You get much greater control when working with RAW over JPEG. |

Re: RAW files
I was going to use Photoshop - can you recommend a book on this as I don't understand how RAW gives you greater control, so I think I need to read up on this before the client's files turn up on my door step. I sense uncharted waters ahead! |

Where are you located Chris? If in the UK there is a brilliant magazine titled 'Digital Photo' which, this month, has a video tutorial about RAW conversions. PM your e-mail address. Ted |

Re: RAW files
I would highly recommend Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop CS (CS2, CS3) for Photographers. When you open a RAW file the file will be opened in the RAW converter first (assuming you have the correct RAW plugin installed), not in Photoshop directly. You do most of you processing (except cropping, sharpening etc.) here before continuing and proceeding into Photoshop itself. The major advantages over using RAW are that you have complete control over white balancing, which you cannot sucessfully emulate with colour correction of JPEGs. You are also working with 16 bit colours as opposed to 8 bit colours in JPEG, so you get much greater colour depth and resolution. Of course, if you are only producing for web then this will be irrelevant. If you haven't worked in RAW then I highly recommend doing so, and producing JPEGs or TIFF as output files. The control you get over JPEGs is enormous. |
