saving jpeg with transparent background
Hi all I want to save some logos on a transparent background. It works when I save the file as a Photoshop file, but when I save it as a jpeg it puts a white background on it. Is there something I can do to change this? Chris |

Make it a .png or .targa file. .png would probably make more sense. |

Save as a TIFF works also. |

Hi Chris The guys are correct. You need to save it in a different format that supports transparency. Jpeg doesn't support transparency, which is why the white background gets added. |

An alternative to saving the jpeg on a transparent background is to save the jpeg with a path and therefore you are able to convert the path to a selection in another program that supports it or use the path in a DTP package which will knockout the white background. You don't really state what you want to use the jpegs for? If it's the internet then PNG if you wish to retain photographic detail although at the cost of greater file size or if you have an image that can withstand converting to GIF without looking awful then I'd go with that option, however another alternative if the jpeg is for a website is to know the exact colour value of your website's background and flatten the transparent jpeg in Photoshop to a background of the same colour therefore when you come to post the jpeg you can fool people into thinking it's on a transparent background

You could also save it as a jpeg2000 |

You need the JPEG2000 plug-in, which isn't installed by default any more. It's in the Goodies/Photoshop Only section on the Resources disk that came with Photoshop. Alternatively, you can download a version of the plug-in from here. |
