Floating piece of land effect
Hello there.

OK, so now I have drive to create an effect, a bagful of ideas in my head but my lack of knowledge lets me down. This image from Anton is a great example of what I am trying to achieve.

The questions are, (I have a vague idea, but not sure if I am right).

How do create the floating land piece? (Is it a case of stitching an inverted mountain on a piece of grass?). Any net text/video tutorial would be a great help.

How do I create the 'above the clouds' look? (Is this just an inverted sky or has it been done wholly in Ps)

I hope the more learned of you can read this image perfectly and know exactly what has been done, and maybe you can offer me some tips.

Thank you.

Scott

Using Filter->Render->Clouds on a layer above anything else then setting the blend mode to Screen is a good start for any fog, smoke, mist or cloud effects.

There is nothing special about the image you posted. It should be easy to create something similar with minimal PS skills I think.

I don't think rendered clouds would look at all convincing here. Has to be the real thing, unless you want to spend a long time drawing them.

What we have here is two photographs of clouds, one taken from a plane, patched together - and the different shades of the clouds make the join fairly obvious. To bury the inverted mountain (probably the easiest solution) in the cloud, just paint it out on a layer mask with a soft edged brush.

I think I can feel a Friday Challenge coming on here...

Hello. Thank you for the replies.

The artist (Anton) has kindly sent me the .psd file for this particular image. I can see that many layers have been used here, somewhere around 80 layers altogether, and that many of the layers are soft touches.

I can see better what has been done now, but still a little lost on some of the effects. The sky (bottom part of the image) is an inverted sky and the 'mountain' is actually a photo of a small rock.
The added mist is one of the effects that throw me, not sure what brush was used here, but it could be as you said Steve, a soft edged brush with reduced opacity maybe.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm not a pro and I've only had Ps for 6 months now, completely self taught with lots to learn, so I apologize if I am asking seemingly very easy questions.

Thanks again and as for the friday challenge, um... at this stage it would take me more than 7 days to come up with something anywhere near this.

Don't worry Scott.. I've had the bloody thing for over a decade and I still can't work it right!
Oh dear... that's not very encouraging, is it.
Hang in there buddy!

I didn't mean in place of the real clouds. I meant for use in front of the image for the misty look.

An example below. These are just rendered clouds but I think they look good.
