Re: Making it look real
im only a newbie so not sure if i am right but ill give my thoughts. To me something that could be better is the blurring, the people in the queue are blurred but the building behind them is in perfect detail still. also maybe some shadows on the people at the front of the line? The guy at the billboard seems too big too, you have a guy walking away from the camera just in front the line of people and he is half the height of other people so the perspective etc needs changing. There will be some better answers than mine and mine is probably wrong anyway but having a guess will improve my skills too! |

Re: Making it look real
Hi Kuham, You have chosen to create quite a complex montage with loads of challenges. Royal has already correctly identified some of the problems with it in relation to reality. Most of us on this forum (bar our maestro Steve of course) are challenged by this problem of perspective including me so I hope others will step in to correct me if necessary. This is a classic example of needing to get the perspective right and having an idea of a horizon. Below is an idea which I hope will help. First off you need to establish a horizon by perhaps drawing a line or using the ruler. This needs to tie in with the image overall such as the buildings, the first, second floor windows, in the background. Please see the line in my image below which I think is roughly where it should be. Secondly, all the people in the image should be at eye level to this line regardless of their overall distance from the front of the image. This means that the man front left in your image is too small and the man beside the poster and the people in the queue are too short or not properly positioned. I have done a very quick job on the front left man (rough cloning I'm afraid) and given him a shadow that lines up with the light/shadow in the image and is approx the same intensity (opacity). You also need to give the people in the rest of the image shadows to 'ground' them. It is quicker to do but lengthy to describe. Also Royal quite rightly mentioned the blurriness of the people at the back of the queue which isn't quite right. Look up 'eyelines' and 'perspective' in any of Steve's versions of 'How to Cheat' books and you will get all the help you need on perspectiive, shadows and vanishing points which will also help here with your queue. I hope this rough quick version of your image gives you some idea. PS: You had already posted a better version just as I posted mine but I hope my version still gives you some ideas. ![]() |

Re: Making it look real
Your better version is better but the people at the billboard are still too big. The guy facing away from the camera (with the dark coat at the front of the queue) is still only waist height to them, they need to be around the same size as him. If you use his eyeline as the horizon then make everyone elses eyeline level with his then it will be much better, esp if that guy is from the original photo (which it seems). |

Re: Making it look real
Hi Royal, I didn't have time to select all the people, extract them from the image and resize them. Presumably Kuham will have them on separate layers. His second image is not far off in terms of perspective but possibly still needs some shadows. |

Re: Making it look real
Hi Sophie, sorry, my comment was aimed towards Kuham's better version. I thought he still needed to make the people the same size at the one man facing away from the camera. I should have mentioned this as i did post right after your one. sorry. ![]() |

Re: Making it look real
I agree with Sophie's comments and the man in the foreground looks much better. My view is that the key here lies in three main areas:- 1. Vanishing point 2. Relativity, namely the size of objects relative to one another 3. Lighting Relativity - Billboards, like the one depicted are possibly 20 feet tall, possibly more, so that would make the figure standing next to it a real giant, even in the am,ended version. The clue here is the yellow bollard to his right, which I assume is within the same image. This would be around waist height. Remember, the guys who put up posters use ladders! VP - The eyeline is difficult, because the road looks as if it's sloping down towards the camera and the building in the background is at an angle. I would suggest the left face of the building is the best bet to give an indication and would say Sophie is about right. Lighting - You have chosen a scene taken in winter, with the sun coming from top left. Sunlight is always difficult to match with stock images and the shadows need to follow the correct direction. Make sure your figures are dressed for the season. Once you have scaled your figure by the bollard and possibly given him something to stand on, the queue of people can be scaled to match him. I think you'll have a far more realistic image however, it's not clear to me what the queue is trying to portray, so you may wish to consider replacing the people, who are quite distorted, with a few random figures looking at what the man is doing. I would consider using a different start image. The one you have chosen has burn-out on the buildings and is making life difficult to find characters to fit. Alternatively, snap some new people in similar lighting conditions. Hope this helps. Nick |
