Saving Cut Out
I seem to remember that I had this problem before, but for the life of me I can't remember the solution!
I have photographed a single Banana on a white background. I have then selected it using the pen tool. Next I have saved the selection (although I am having a problem understanding this bit, because once the file is put away, if I wanted to find the saved selection where would it be?).
However, my main problem is although I always use Transparent Backgrounds on my new canvasses, I always lose the transparency when I flatten the image.
So, I make the selection and remove the background, I am left with the object on a checkered background, next when I flatten to save as a jpg (usually) the background automatically turns to white! Even if I open a new canvas (with transparent background, and then drag/copy the object and paste/drop onto my new canvas, when I save the new file, the background turns to white.
How do I keep the transparent background please?

Many thanks in advance....

Hi Mark,

If I understood your problem, and I'm not mistaken, the solutions are:
1) the selection you saved is under the channels tab,
or, if saved as a clipping path, in the path tab, as I usualy do.
take a look here:
http://www.fotolibra.com/seller/portfolio/edit.php?image_id=704409
2) jpg files don't accept transparent backgrounds.

Re: Saving Cut Out
Hi Mark,

With your selection active go to Select>Save Selection. A dialogue box will open where you can name it. Stay with the default 'New Channel' setting and click Save. Now go to the Channels palette and you will see your selection there as a separate Alpha Channel.

Alternatively, with the selection active, go to the Channels Palette and create a new channel. Alt-Backspace to fill with white and give it a name just as you would name a new layer.

Photoshop won't let you save the file as a jpg and still keep the Alpha Channel so save it as a psd file.

Similarly jpgs don't let you have transparency, hence the white background, so if you try to save the file as a jpg you will lose both the alpha channel and any transparency.

@GKB Yes, from what I can gather Paulo set up a 'table-top' studio set in the lounge at home on Sunday. Unfortunately, a lot of the 'models' he was using were for Sunday Lunch - Fruit & Veg - her-in-doors was not amused and it was 6.00 pm before he had finished shooting and she could start cooking. Not so much a computer widow but more a 'Provisions Widow' in this case perhaps?

Re: Saving Cut Out
Gordon & Paulo, thank you so much for your help. Can I please just run this by you?

After completing the necessary cleaning etc of the image. I make a selection using the Pen tool>Right Click>Save as Selection>Name selection. Then once happy flatten the image to a jpg. I lose the transparency and the image is now on a white Background.
I then email to client. When the client receives the jpg and they now wish to use the Cut-Out in their artwork, they can open the file>Paths Tab>then click on the button at the bottom of the screen that reads 'Load Path as a Selection' and then use that selection in their artwork etc?
Does that make sense please?

Many thanks

Re: Saving Cut Out
Hi Mark,

Maybe Im missing the obvious here....but couldn't you just save it as a .png once you have removed the white background? .png supports transparency

Re: Saving Cut Out
Brill, thanks Gordon.

Thanks Anna, yes I could, but the client specifically asked for jpg! Not sure why, but I'm sure they have their reasons.

Thanks for the input Anna, much appreciated.

Yes! That's the story ! Not only fruit & veg, but it was a Kurdish meal, that was ordered ! With both intentions, to photograph and to lunch! Did you saw the tea cup that I already posted ? Did you think it could be admited as an English style tea with milk ?

I'm sure that pic will suffice Paulo, but check out this for a traditional 'English' cup & saucer. 704984 (Not mine I might add).
