Gambling A/V
Further to making dice I have just tried to select a tray of coins as in Steves' case study on page 393 of his book. After 2 hours i gave up, being left with a page of black circles - i couldn't get back to the coins on a new layer - the instructions are clear enough but i couldn't just get the sequence of actions to work out. Sorry Steve, I shall now do an perimeter selection of my picture of coins and cut and paste it onto another background. (I'll go back to it at a later date. Elona. |

Re: Gambling A/V
Were you working in QuickMask when you tried to select the coins? And had you set QuickMask to display Selected areas, rather than Masked areas? If you ever feel like trying this one again, I'd be glad to help out with it. Just tell me exactly where it's going wrong. |

Re: Gambling A/V
Thanks Steve - i followed the 6 steps, but have obviously misinterpreted something. When i go back to it i'll contact you if it goes belly up again. In the meantime i tried the magic wand tool to make a selection and the attached is my measly effort - as a novice i have such a lot to learn about the different selection methods - the fly was a good practise but i need to re-learn that again to get a clean outline - i might get away with this for my club AV next week - time is running out to finish it. ![]() |

Just trying to help 1) First comment. Just only my thoughts, the automatic stuff gives me a pain to clean up afterwards, like you seem to have ![]() I think Steve does it different to me, maybe I would go for pen tool for this. Again, just me. The pen tools never lies. Save the path and can mess around with it afterwards, if you have enough time. Save. Create as a slection. Create the mask and its quite quick after that. That said, that you have a quite complex selection here for the pen. Just me, I'd invest the time Pen time here. Actually you can mix all the methods together. This will take you some time, so see next if you have the mask entry. CS5 offers some quicker solutions, but I'm not the best expert on that. |

2) Second: Quick way. If you have the mask(s), "just" paint nicely with a not to dense brush. Keep pressing ctrl/cmd x to change from black and white (add/subtract). Its good fun. If you use low ~20% you can just repeat and get stronger effect. Use history to go back. Even after that you can copy the layer and create a new one and put a new mask on it. Cheat: what you need to do then on the mask, use some filters. Blur. (Not sharp mask). And also you can select it and contract, increase contrast. Sorry it takes a lot of time, but we get faster with use of the tools in PS. Sorry I have to stop.... |

Thank you so much Jota for your time and information. I'll print off your suggestions etc. and come back to these processes after next Friday when i need to present my current A/V (it may have to be just 'work in progress' on this occasion.) I love the attachment. Elona. |

Re: Gambling A/V
Hello again Steve, I have at long last been able to make a Quick mask selection of my coins from page 393 of your book - after 4 further attempts - the 'penny' clicked! Attached is the web copy of my efforts. I presented the 'Gambling and Risk Taking' AV last Friday (previously cancelled due to snow) at my Camera Club so 'Job Done'. It was suggested that i could have just deleted the background to get the same effect or to use the magic wand tool at a greater tolerance setting and then erase any untidy bits - all very interesting exercises. Thanks again for your advise. Elona ![]() |
