Large Document Format, PSB file
Hi there, Occasionally I receive files that have me a bit stumped. They're PSB files in which some approach 8gb (yes, 8 freeking gigabytes). They explode to over 24gb of hard disk memory after opening. And I have to get them ready for commercial printing. The artwork is full of unnecessary layers, hidden layers, smart objects embedded in smart objects..... it's just a mess. And it brings my comp to a grinding halt. My only goal here is to simply Flatten the document --> save. Then re-open and resize/resample to something more manageable for further processing. Whenever I get these crazy files, the only way I've been able to process them is open in Photoshop, and merge the layers each one at a time into the next layer below. Simply flattening the entire document crashes the computer. Is there another method to flatten PSB files? Illustrator/InDesign doesn't support this filetype, and as my work is deadline-driven, getting new (reworked) files isn't possible. Perhaps Distiller or Bridge or some other processor can convert the document into something else; tiff, jpeg, psd.... and in doing so, it flattens the document as a result? Thanks in advance, -Chris |

btw, Merging each layer to the next layer below takes anywhere between 15-30 mins for it to complete that process - each time I merge a layer. ![]() |

Who on earth is giving you these files? Can't you go back to them and ask for the empty layers to be removed? |
