Natural Selections
I'm working on the natural selections chapter and on page 4 you have several examples with the tire. I think I understand how to make a selection but one thing that has me confused is that you say in the book, " After you begin to draw from the center outwards. The selected region is shown at the side"

In the book you show the selected hub cap to the left, when I make my selection I do not see anything to the left as shown in the book. Are there assumed steps I should already know? or am I just doing it wrong.

Re: Natural Selections
I've isolated the hubcap on the left to show the area that you've selected more clearly: if you were to make a new layer from the selection, this is what the content of that layer would be. It won't appear at the side by itself!

I did it this way because people have had some difficulty understanding how to make selections interact. You might like to view the movie that accompanies this section on the CD, which may make it clearer.

Re: Natural Selections
Thanks for clearing that up, I understand now. I'm like most people when reading something in a tutorial I think something is wrong if I follow the steps and don't get the same thing shown in the tutorial.

The Movies are great, I for one learn better from a video than a written tutorial. The only problem is your selections video explain clearly how selections work but the video is not the same as on Page 4. I don't know how much time it takes to make a tutorial video but I know if you had a movie for every lesson in the book it would be a great addition.

I'm the type of person who points out things that confuse me but by no means does it mean I am unhappy with your books, they are great ! but like any book some people get confused easier than others.

The movies are an absolute nightmare to do! They take ages, then there's all the hassle of optimising them so they run fast and don't take up the whole CD. Nice to know they're worthwhile!

Re: Natural Selections
on putting the pen into practice for some reason I cannot remove the hole in the handle I follow each step , after i pen the outside.and close .then I do the inside and for the life of me I can figure this.in the paths palette the inside is drawn but when I try to turn it into a selection only the outside of the cup is selected and not the handle hole

Re: Natural Selections
Louis,

I had the same problem while back. If you go to the 'Image Doctor' section, look for the thread entitled 'Path to Selection Problem', the solution is there (so no need for Steve to retype it)

Hope this helps,

David
