Bald Bush
Steve,
Your book is excellent! I am a relatively new user to Photoshop, and am amazed at what you have figured out to do with it. I am working on the "Problem of Hair Loss" section and am stuck on step 4. I have made one layer mask on LAYER 1, which has my elliptical bald spot. I cannot make another layer mask, only a vector mask. I made a vector mask anyway, but I cannot get rid of the hair behind the bald dome.

Yes, I think I need to rewrite those instructions. You should have a layer mask for the bald spot layer, and a separate one for the Bush layer. When I say 'make another layer mask' I agree, it's confusing - I meant make another mask, but this time for the other layer.

Glad you're enjoying the book despite that!

Re: Bald Bush
Thanks Steve. That worked. I have two more questions for you.

1) I resihaped the elliptical bald spot using distort. Is that the best way?
2) What is the best way to select a head perfectly? Bush's head looks so perfect.

Again, thanks for such a neat book.

Re: Bald Bush
Richard,

1) Yes, although Free Transform lets you distort, stretch, scale and rotate all in one go.

2) The Pen tool is the best way to select any outline. Check out the pages on this tool in the Natural Selection chapter - it really is an essential tool to master.

Looking forward to your taking part in our new weekly challenges!

Steve

Re: Bald Bush
I am still having trouble with Step 4. I am trying to make an advertisement for a friend's 40th birthday party. I'm attempting to bald him and turn his hair gray. I cannot figure out how to paint out the hair on the bald dome. Help! I'm relatively new to layer masks.

Thanks!

Rick

Re: Bald Bush
After you've added the bald dome and scaled it to size, add a layer mask using Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. Then paint in black on this mask, using a soft edged brush, to hide the dome and so reveal some of the original hair beneath.

If you're still having problems with this, post the image you're working on and I'll show you how to do it.
