Preview discrepancy??
An interesting problem, I was playing around with a wheel, trying to reproduce a rust effect. I added a large amount of noise to a copy of the rim, then adjusted the hue/saturation to give a reddish brown. All looked fine in the preview but when I confirmed the change, the output changed to a somewhat washed out browny grey. The same happened with curves and levels. If I make the colour change before adding the noise, it's fine. Any ideas?? _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Sounds like something to do with the Layer Blending settings, but it's hard to tell without seeing how your layers are constructed. Let me know if you resolve the issue. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Re: Preview discrepency??
Sounds weird to me. I've just tried replicating what you said you did and had no problem. (Had to use a wooden wheel, though, as I couldn't find a suitable metal one, so I'm not sure the rust would have been so convincing anyway.) Can you post a low res of the PSD so we can take a look? |

Re: Preview discrepancy??
OK, a 600x400 psd is here 3 layers, original, isolated and rim isolated. I was working on the rim layer, firstly, I applied noise (quite a lot , about 70 for the full sized image 3020x2040), then tried hue/saturation (colorize, hue 20, sat 50). it looks fine in preview but seems to lose contrast when applied. If i lower the noise it seems better or knock it out completely and it's fine. Curiously, when I started PS to redo this, it had lost all its settings. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Preview discrepency??
Well, I just tried it using your exact settings and it worked fine. Can't think what the problem might be. But if you really want to get this effect and it's driving you nuts, you could always pick a brown foreground colour and shift-delete to open the Fill dialog, then choose Color. Much the same result. |

Re: Preview discrepency??
I've had a go myself Trinity, but like Steve I had no problems either. ![]() Although I found it worked better by applying the noise to the Hue & Saturation layer mask than directly to the wheels hub. I made a copy of that Layer Mask and pasted it to a New Document where I converted it to RGB and applied a Lighting Effect using the Red Channel for the Texture Channel with White set at 3 - converted back to grayscale and then copy and pasted back into the Hue & Sat Layer Mask. Also in the Hue & Sat. dialogue I reduced the Lightness considerably (-50) and Layer Blending mode to Overlay, then created 2 more copies of the Hue & Sat. layer with ligther Lightness settings and finally a Level Adjustment Layer to increase the contast. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Shrug - Just my PC being weird I expect. It's not really important, I was just experimenting. Maiden, that's a great effect but wouldn't it be quicker to leave the wheel out in the rain and take a photo? ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Preview discrepancy??
It's definitely a problem solely with my PC/PS, I loaded the psd up on my PC at work, no problems at all - I shall go home and beat it severely with a branch. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

I think you'll find that may void your warranty. But hey, it worked for Basil Fawlty. |

I built the PC myself, so I don't have to worry about the warranty ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Actually, I don't know what's happened to my spelling recently, must be an age thing. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

I thought I'd solved it, I installed the latest video drivers but no, still a problem. Next step, reinstall PS. To illustrate: ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Preview discrepancy??
Bizarre. Never come across that before. Does it happen every time? And with other files? |

Re: Preview discrepancy??
I just tried it on another image, did the same thing, yet, if I omit the noise, it's fine. I can't understand it, surely, once noise is applied, it becomes part of the raster image? _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |
