batch processing
I have batches of photos for each of which I am writing an action and applying to the batch. As part of several of these actions, I have to resize the photos to a max of 300 pixels - width (landscape) height (portrait). Do I have to divide all the batches into landsape and portrait and do a seperate action for each or is there a way that PS can make the distinction and I can write a macro into the action? Also, I find the order in which you do things in an action, has an effect sometimes on the batch results - is there someone who can give me an idea of what order to run them in? Trial and error is teaching me a lot I suppose....

E,

Not sure about the order of your action steps, as that would be highly dependent on what those steps are. Without knowing it's hard to help with that. However, as far as making your images fit to 300 pixels, be it landscape or portrait is an easy one. Rather than using "image size" to determine the dimensions, use File > Automate > Fit Image, and enter 300 pixels for width and height. That will ensure that none of your images exceed those dimensions without screwing up the proportions.

Hope that helps!

Re: batch processing
Thanks Brian, I will give it a go. I have about 60 batches still to do, so it's a big help.

Re: batch processing
Remember that if you set up your action you can choose which files to process from the File Browser directly - saves having to open each one first, or even place them in a separate folder.

I assume these are all horsey pics?

Re: batch processing
Lots of elephants but not a single horse in sight - I am doing a long overdue revamp of a website I look after for a Canadian journalist in Bangkok. Each story - and there are about 100, has it's own batch of photos and when I originally put them up one by one over a period of about ten years, I knew nothing about optimising etc. There is a lot of work to be done on each batch.

"Actions" are a gift from the Photoshop gods - I am determined to master them.

Does Photoshop 7 have the same file browser feature? I may be doing something wrong.....

Re: batch processing
The File Browser first appeared in Photoshop 7. I think you could set Actions from within it then, but it may be that capability didn't appear until CS. Browse the browser!

Actions really are the most useful thing. I use them for all kinds of purposes, and they really are ideal for batch processing. Remember the 'stop' feature, which lets you pause an action during playback so you can set your own values at that point if you want to.
