images for the web
David Asch posted a link to a beautiful web portfolio for Ryan and it reminded me about a problem I have with making images for the Internet. My JPEG files look washed out when I view them in my browser, but the native Photoshop files look fine. How do I make my JPEG files vibrant and colorful? I use a Mac, is that a factor? Do I need to change the settings in Photoshop to view my images? |

Neal, It may be due to your colour profile. Most browsers ignore the profile and will render them using sRGB, so if you have set up a new profile for your monitor/PS, that will be ignored. If you use Save for Web, open the fly-out menu above the preview window and make sure it's set to uncompensated color. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Thanks David, but please excuse my ignorance, I don't follow what your talking about. Are you saying I should set my monitor and Photoshop profile to sRGB? How do go about creating a profile? I don't use Save For Web, because I use PS 5.0. I have PS 7.0 on my hard drive, but I don't like it. It's got too many tools and palettes and menus. I'm sorry if I'm slow, I'm new to creating work for the web, I've been a print designer for decades. |

Hmm, it probably isn't profile related. To be honest, I'm not sure, might be one for Steve! _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: images for the web
I believe this all has to do with contrast between the picture and the backrounds of the site. If you put a picture against a bright blueish color like this website it will look worse if it is a brighter picture, since it blends with the backround. Notice how ryan uses darker low saturation backrounds in order to accentuate the images, and it works excellent. In order to fix your problem you can turn the saturation of the picture up, and the brightness down, and then the contrast won't clash so much between you picture and the site backround. Which one looks better? ![]() ![]() Of course Ryans picture still looks pretty good, but not as good as if it was on a dark backround. If his saturation and contrast on his picture was turned down it would look even worse, so I believe that is your fix. You can also give them a black border, and that would help too. _________________ -Atomic |
