Neon sign - help, please
Hi Steve. I'm working through the neon sign tutorial on page 110. For some reason I can't get from step 5 to step 6. I have PSCS. The Lock Transparency for CS is a button, not a check box, unless I'm looking at the wrong thing. Anyway, once I do the Lock Transparency step I use the paint bucket to fill the selected area of the text with white. Is that right? When I add the background the letters are solid, not hollow as your book shows. Any help on what I'm doing wrong is greatly appreciated! I love your book and have already learned a lot from it.
Thank you!
julie

I think the problem lies in your method of filling. If i'm not mistaken, you are supposed to use the fill dialog, which can be found under the 'edit' menu.

The diffence is that paint bucket works like the magic wand selection tool. It first creates a 'magic wand' type selection and then fills that with whatever color. So depending on the tolerance setting it is not going to fill the low opacity parts of the selection (the feathered part). 'Fill' just takes the selection that you already have and fills it with a color.
I suppose a good comparison might be using the magic eraser tool versus deleting (clearing) the selection.

I hope this helps, please tell me if it dosn't work or if you don't understand it, or if I'm just plain wrong.

Great explanation, Einstein. Spot on.

Julie, I'd recommend using shortcuts for filling: alt-delete fills a selection with the foreground colour, control/command-delete fills with the background. Or use Shift-delete to bring up the dialog!

Let us know if you get stuck anywhere else, and welcome to the forum
